I want a 9mm to shoot when I start taking combat pistol training this spring-I'm a LEO, but I'm paying for this training out of my pocket because although I work for a major dept, firearms training is way, way down on the list (if I was into "community policing" programs the dept would be my oyster).  My personally owned duty gun is a Sig 226 in .357 Sig, but as ammo in 9mm is so cheap, I want to take these classes with 9mm.
I've had a couple of trades for 9mm's fall through, and I haven't bought anything yet, which brings me to my question...
Most of my duty type autos have been Beretta or Sig, and I read a lot of bashing of Glocks on this site.
It looks like the Glocks that give problems are the .40's and .45's; would the glock 17 be a safe purchase?  The 17 is the one that received all the initial testing and pounding, so my thinking is the 17 should have all the bugs worked out of it....am I right?

G17 is a fine 9mm pistol, I have more rounds thru the old G17 I own than any non-1911 handgun owned. I'd say it would be fine for your purposes, the more I shoot mine the better it seems to shoot.

I once ran 17 different makes and bullet types thru mine, all outta one mag, the only thing it don't like is sub-sonic, it shoots 'em just won't cycle properly.

I personally think the G17 is one of the top pistol choices out there but seeing as how your duty weapon is in .357 Sig, wouldn't it make much more sense to get real world training in that caliber?

"357 Sig, wouldn't it make much more sense to get real world training in that caliber"...wave

It would make more sense, but the 357 Sig ammo is very expensive & I need a good excuse for a new gun

Makes sense.
Even with the added  cost of ammo.
Train like you fight, fight like you train.

I would at least get a Sig 226 in 9mm so everything would be similar, but I think even better would be to bite the bullet and spend your new gun money on .357 ammo for your current gun. No new gun will give you as much advantage as learning the one you carry indside and out. JMO
