Can someone explain to me the different frame sizes and how they are grouped or identified by letters?  (K frame, J frame, etc...)

X frame is the biggest - 500 mag size

N frame next down the list - 44 mag size

L frame is next - designed for heavy 357 mag use.

K frame is the mid size.  Originally for 38 special, later 357 mag.  K's did not hold up over time with a steady diet of mag loads, hence the L frame.

J frame - compact 38 snubbie size.

At least for Smiths.  Colt's use a different nomenclature.
