| Can someone explain to me the different frame sizes and how they are grouped or identified by letters? (K frame, J frame, etc...) |
|
X frame is the biggest - 500 mag size N frame next down the list - 44 mag size L frame is next - designed for heavy 357 mag use. K frame is the mid size. Originally for 38 special, later 357 mag. K's did not hold up over time with a steady diet of mag loads, hence the L frame. J frame - compact 38 snubbie size. At least for Smiths. Colt's use a different nomenclature. |

Colt uses: "D" frame for small (Detectvie Special, Cobra, Agent, Diamondback, Police Positive Special) "J" frame for Mk III and MK V Trooper, Lawman, etc. "I" frame for Python "P" frame for Peacemaker "F" frame for cap and ball revolvers of recent production "G, K, & Q" for the .22 cal single actions "AA" for the King Cobra "MM" for the Anaconda "S" for Woodsman, Huntsman, etc .22 autos "O" for Govt Model autos |
