Well actually it will be my second handgun as I plan on buying a Ruger MKIII.  I just received approval on my pistol License here in New Yorkistan and other than the Ruger I want a 9MM.  My choices right now are a Sig p226, Beretta 92 and Glock 17.  One of my stipulations is that I will be able to find pre-ban Hi cap mags.  I did a quick search and have found mags available for all three.  I have fired the Beretta and Sig and liked them both.  Haven't fired the Glock yet but the group of guys I shoot with are all Glock bashers.    The pistol will be used for target and home defense.  I would like to try my hand at some Practical Pistol competition down the road.  Not concerned with concealed carry since it's not an option for me in Suffolk county.  I'm open to any suggestions or recommendations.  Thanks!

Do yourself a favor and check out the Springfield XD's if you haven't already.  I own two and love them.  They are easier for me to grip and the aim seems better.  Getting ready to get the XD 45 ACP next.

Another one too look into is the M&P from smith and wesson.  Great ergonomics on it.  very similar feel to an XD but I like the M&P just a bit better

The handguns you listed are all great guns.  Most of it will come down to what fits you best. The Glock 17/19 is in my opinion the best out of the 3.  The Sig and Beretta are close in quality and price for a new one.  The Sig will be a little more expensive, especially in the mag prices.  Also look into Hk USP. I have owned most of what you are looking at and the best advice I could give you is to try and rent one of each or at the very least try and hold each and dry fire them a few times.

Sig:
I had a 226 that was not a very good handgun.  It needed alot of lube and the finish was the worst of any handgun I have ever owned.  It was easy to shoot and the grip was great.  My experience with the Sig is probably not the norm because a lot of people love there Sigs.

Beretta:
Great mag prices and there are some 15 rnd mags out there that work.  I always wonderd if it was in battery. Better grip for me than he Sig. I like the M9A1.  Sights are not the greatest and the slide mounted safety takes some practice.

Glock:
Most reliable by a long shot.  Best mag price/design/capacity.  Best finish of all handguns I have owned.  Maybe the ugliest of all my handguns (I don't own an XD yet).  The grip and grip angle is not great for me since I shoot the 1911 so often.  The same trigger pull every time is best for me and the 5lb stock one is not bad at all.

Exactly.

Those may be great guns, be he can't get pre-ban mags for them.

For me, the 226 is the most comfortable.

The Glock is what I own and I'd trust it's trust it's reliability over the other two, however all three have excellent reputations as quality, reliable handguns. The grip on the Glock is reasonably comfortable to me, but not as nice as the Sig and nowhwere near as nice as my beloved Browning Hi Power.

The Beretta, although a nice gun, to me is too bulky for a 9mm and I don't like the grip or the trigger, but these are very subjective things that each individual will want their own way.

As usual, all three are great guns (as are most popular guns), handle and dry fire each before you buy, and if possible, shoot each before you buy.

All we can do is relate our personal experiences.

Oh, and don't overlook the Browning Hi Power. You may or may not like it, but it points and fits better than any other handgun I've handled, and pre-ban mags should be plentiful. Heck, they've made the thing since the '30s.

Thanks for the input so far.  I'm going r=to check out the Hi Power.  I forgot all about that one.  It's one of my all time favorites from an aesthetic point of view.

Like I said I have fired both the Sig and the Beretta but have no experience with the glock.  The beretta did seem a little large to me but not unwieldy.  The Sig felt a little better in my hand.  My fingers seemed to find the controls very naturally.

I'n not going to make any quick decisions.  I'll see if I can handle them all side by side.
