My wife bought a Bulgarian Arsenal Makarov years ago and, although it will function just fine with ball ammo, it doesn't do well with the cheap Silver Bear JHP I bought for it. I've got a lot of this ammo and I really want it to work right. When it's really really clean it'll get through a mag or two before it starts having problems. It seems that it only really has problems with the first two or three rounds out of a full mag. It fires, extracts and ejects fine, but will hang up with a round partway home. A slight push on the magazine and the round chambers. I already polished the feed ramp a bit on my own but I'm thinking either professional feed ramp polishing or a new mag might fix the problem. I'd like to hear the hive's opinion before I go through this same dance again with this pistol that I've done with so many others.
Could be a weak magazine spring. I was having the same problem and switched out the spring with a Wolff replacement spring and no more problems. I think the run around $8 so it would be cheap to try out. These guns are usually not picky with ammo so I tend to think the issue isn't with the feed ramp. I'd definately try a new spring.
Consider also the possibility of a weak recoil spring that may lack the force to chamber a balky round. I have a Wolff 19# spring in my EG, along with a ramp polish, and have no feed problems. Since you don't know the age or condition of the current spring, you might want to change it out on general principles.
