Trying to remove the slide release pin on my G17 Gen4 to install an extended slide release.  It just won't budge with a few taps from a hammer and punch.  I didn't want to really wail on it––do I need to do that to get it to punch out?  TIA for any comments.

apply a little pressure with a punch, and move the slide stop around with your thumb and forefinger...

Just wiggle it aroind a bit like the last poster said.  It'll come loose without using anything more than finger pressure on the punch.  DON'T beat on it.

Yep, you need to wiggle the slide release around a bit.

That pin (the trigger pin) has a groove in it and the release can get "hung up" in the groove.

Wiggling the slide release is the key. When everything is in the right position, the pin comes out with no kung fu grip needed.

It'll work a lot better if you jiggle it fore-and-aft, as opposed to "wiggling it around." Remove left-to-right.   Replace right-to-left, making sure that the spring is under the locking block pin.

Remove the top pin FIRST........left to right
Put minimum pressure on the bottom pin, slide the release forward/ rearward slightly......when the hole is in alignment the pin will slide out..............left to right
to install
install the top pin first..........guides the wire spring into place............right to left
install the slide stop lever into position
install the bottom pin.....right to left.....look thru the hole to align everything, push the pin in with finger pressure ( maybe a little more )

Well, I ended up kind of wailing on it, after watching a gunsmith video in which he said the first time the pin comes out it could take a little beating, as demonstrated in the video.  Since the weapon is basically 1 month old, I figured that was the case.  It did eventually come out, and the new slide release works great.

It's what the pro in the video did, I figured what the hell.

Pro?

I'm a Glock armorer - not a pro.  I've never had to use anything more than finger pressure on all my Glocks and department Glocks even when they were new.

Oh well, at least you got it out.  I don't think I'd use a hammer again though!

I have a question:  I get the left to right thing for tapered pins and dovetails, but why does it matter on a gun with untapered pins?

it doesn't, but will keep your mind on the same track as if it were a tapered pin/dovetail. that way you never screw up one.

A "pro" would never beat on the pins

Every Glock that I have ever worked on, once you wiggle the slide stop to the right place the pin will simply push out with hand pressue on the punch

Why do you think the Glock tool does not include a hammer...

You're not automatically a "pro" just because you figured out how to upload a video to youtube...

Take a look at the trigger pin picture above.  If you tried removing it right to left the 2nd notch in the pin can get hung up on the slide stop spring.  Then you'll have to wiggle the slide stop around again to get it out of the 2nd notch.

I've found that 'wiggling' the slide stop front to back usually does the trick
