as i posted earlier my wife gave me a SA ultra compact today. The manual states that +p ammo should not be used in any 45 barrel less than 5" long.

What is the reason for this? Is it because the bullet clears the barrel before the velocity gets up to speed? Or will it actually damage a short barrel?

I beleive it is more due to the lighter recoil spring in the compact pistols and the battering of the frame/slide

Most off the shelf 1911 have a spring designed for hardball and 950 fps ammo, Plus P ammo runs around 1100 fps or higher. Best bet is to replace the stock spring with a Wilsons 18 to 20 lbs spring designed for your compact

Contact them and see what they recommend for it and go with their suggestion. They do know their springs

Slide speed may be too fast to reliably pick up rounds from the magazine, due to less mass (weight) and the increased speed that the slide will travel rearward, compress the recoil spring and then begin forward travel to battery

I put the wilson recoil kit in my officers...they specifically advise not to use shock buffers....I believe both this and the + ammo question are basically the same...as c&l says....the restricted travel in the smaller frames.......I`m going to go through the colt manual again..I don`t remember any ammo warnings but will recheck.......see...it`s good to bring up these questions......keeps us from becoming..."complacent"..where you could be incorrect...(speaking for myself at least)...........

Definitly do not use shock buffers in the commander and smaller models, They do not leave enough room for slide travel and will result in feeding failures

Only thing the colt manual says is....."extensive use of +p ammo will result in premature wear of your pistol"......that`s it............
