I have always used Chip McCormick mags in my 1911's.

Until recently, I have had no issues- I have some mags that have been loaded the better part of four years- still 100% reliable.

Recently, I have bought a couple more 1911's to add to my collection- time for new mags.

I bought some of the 8round SS with the numbered holes, some without numbered holes, and a few Kimber mags (I believe Chip makes Kimbers- purely speculation).

Anyways- I have been having problems, particularly out of a Springfield Champion, with holding the slide back on the last round. I replaced the slide stop thinking that it was the gun- improved some, but still have some problems out of three mags (one of each mentioned above).

I also tried the mags in a tried and true Colt that has never given me anything but reliability with similar results.

Could it be Q/C with Chip mags?

Does anyone have similar problems with newer Chip mags?

What should I do to correct the problem? (Wish to avoid sending the mags to Chip)

Just got 3 CM 8 rd SS mags for my 1911 last two weeks ago.  They were the power mags with the numbered holes.  Shot 500 rounds on the 3 mags last weeks with no jams.

I had similar problems with my Champion I had 6-7 years ago.  The only mags it ever reliably fed with and locked with were Mec-Gar 7rd. mags.  They have a completely different follower - much like a Sig 220.

It's too bad that gun was such a lemon because it sure was purty.

I am sure it is not just the Champion b/c I have tried the same mags in other pistols with similar results.

Been using "shooting stars"  in my  full size Kimber since I got it.  Never a problem.  I've had problems with the stock Kimber mags, so they got tossed from the equation.    I don't know if Chip would be having input on the stock mags.
I haven't bought any newer Chip mags, so keep us posted down the road on your findings.
Good Luck

Those are basically McCormick marked shooting Star Mags.

The bodies are the same size as the standard 7 rounder.  They function fine as 7 round mags,  with springs set up to hold that amount.  However, bringing up to 8 round specs creates problems, as in theres no room for the 8th round and a spring/follower combo that can be counted on.

Mags like the CMC Power Mags are built from the ground up to function as 8 rounders.

So, should I try changing out the followers and springs?

Has anyone done such a mod that can recommend a particular spring/follower combo that works well?

I have had great luck using the Wilson combat 47D conversion kits on SA bodies getting the 8 round count (factory seven rounder’s).  The kit per mag is 7.95, but you get killed on shipping (another 7.95 per order) when you order direct.

Also, keep in mind that my pistols will hand cycle empty cases!!!!! If you have pistol feed issues (like the feed ramp, extractor, or recoil spring tension and not specifically the mag), this may not solve the problem.

people seem to have trouble with the champs, but wouldn't that be mag spring pressure?

Today, I went to the gun show and bought a Wilson Combat conversion (45C).

I found one mag that would not hold the slide open from racking the slide. Replaced with 45C- instant magic.

I still have to test fire to see.

I also bought a WC 8rd magazine to test.

If it works out- I will replace all of magazines with the 45C conversion and from now on- nothing but WC mags for me.

The problem was definetly spring power. I bought some Wolff springs for Chip/Colt 8 round mags and my commander is working flawlessly with them.

In the future, I will only buy Wilson combat and all troublesome mags will get a Wolff spring first thing.
