why does race and/or sexual preference matter when choosing friends? It seems to me that people are afraid to like someone because why? If a person is a good person why can't you be friends with a homosexual or some other diversity, without feeling weird. Is that taught, lack of exposure, lack of education, what? What are people afraid of?
|
|
Because we are humans.
As we grow older we find that some people share our beliefs and have similar things in common. fer instance, can a young person have an interesting conversation about Dr. Dre with someone in their fifties? Or Lawrence Welk? |
|
Xpatriot, Sometimes that is true and sometimes it is just perceived to be that way.

I can be friends with anybody. I'm even friends with some dummycrats. A "gay" friend moved to CA and died of aids. A black friend just kind of drifted away. Maybe he wanted to listen to rap music. You can't do that in my house. [:\]

If I choose to get poontang, I am going to be damned sure it is from a female friend. I don't want to end up with something like in the "Crying Game".

Race shouldn't have anything to do with it. But I would not choose a friend if say...they didn't believe in the our God given Right to Keep and Bear Arms. It wouldn't matter if they were highly educated or barely educated. I don't have any friends that do not stand and remove their caps when the National Anthem is sung.
I'm not afraid of any of those things you mentioned but I am not going to compromise my ethics or patriotism just to include somebody "different". Lynn [flag] |

Race is an important thing.
Like it or not, race isn't just a "color"- It is a "culture"- Some cultures are more compatable with each other than others. Every day, I drive through the local ghetto to do my pickups at the warehouse. In the middle of a workday, I see nothing but hordes of 15-45 year old negros standing around holding 32 Oz bottles of Malt Booze, and bullshitting. I assure you that such behavior isn't part of my white culture. Racial seperation is a natural instinct. Take a look at a professional sports locker room after the game. The Bruthas on one side of the room, and the crackas on the other. This is real. Like it or not. The races are different. And some races are indeed more advanced, civilized, and decent than others, too. Like that or not. McTruth |

Race and gender doesnt stop me from making friends. hell i talk to democrats and socialists all the time. Hmmmm maybe thats why i'm a libertarian. he he [:D]

Skin pigment has nothing to do with friends. Culture and common interests have everything to do with it. I’ve lived in the military society for the last (God) 20 years and find it easier to relate to a black/brown/yellow/white fellow Chief Petty Officer than say a matching color civilian coal miner from Tennessee.
At morning muster I was instructed to “say something” about interracial harmony. My shop has a couple of blacks, two browns and a yellow along with the seven or eight whites. When I read off my task we all started laughing as we get along like so many brothers (like in a family not in a gang) – I pointed out each person’s color – including me as black and said there, that’s our racial make up, anybody got a problem with that? Apparently the black sailors are using the “N” word, which is not permitted aboard. I instructed my sailors that the word didn’t belong in a polite society and that I would under no condition, permit it to be used in my presence. Much of the hip-hop music is full of the “N” word that I will not permit it to be played. At a recent ship’s party with over 2000 people in attendance I went to the DJ and instructed him that if I heard another song with that word in it that his gig would come to a sudden and very painful ending as I, being black, was greatly offended by the use of the “N” word. We in the military rise above our differences and suffer the service together. Yeah sure, after hours the different races will all hang out together playing cards, shooting hoops or chatting but it’s the cultural differences that draw us apart. The more senior sailors are more commonly race blind as our culture is more of one of the service to the sea than what little remains of civilian life. |

Oh shit, I actually agree with some of what McUzi said. Yes cultures tend to be different, and some don't mesh. Much like what Rich314 said, background and upbringing. Its difficult when your background and upbringing is different. Even coming from different parts of the country can cause some sort of prejudice. I really believe that getting education on the different cultures can alleviate this.
Me personally find that I get along better with caucasians than I do with my fellow Filipinos. I grew up having most of my family's friends and my friends being caucasians. It just happened that way. I do have Filipino friends, but my caucasian friends outnumber 'em. My best friend in this entire planet is caucasian. I've dated mainly caucasian women. I still keep the Filipino history in my heart and know my heritage and do not deny it. In my upbringing, since I've been primarily around thru out my life with caucasians I pretty much am more comfortable around em. |
|
I guess because "most" people would prefer to have friends with similar beliefs/morals and interests.
Cultural Diversity does not often make a good bed-fellow. But speaking for myself, I choose my friends based on their character and merit. |

Color,Race,Culture.
Doesn't bother me.However,if you can't speak "ENGLISH" ,do not try to make me feel guilty for not understanding Your language... GOD BLESS AMERICA. P.S. No looking UP me KILT. |

I dunno...the last time I was at a gathering of 40+ AR15.com members and friends, nearly every skin color on the planet was represented. Not much cultural diversity though. Everyone there seemed only to be a member of the gun culture.

I think it's all just part of the test. You know ...... " Judge not lest ye be judged." Why would a thinking man pass judgement on another human being on the basis of such superficial crap? Should the rat spend a lifetime apologizing to the squirrel for his lack of a bushy tail? And who decided the squirrel should set the standard? I hold no prejudice against either, unless one of them bites me. That there's an individual conscious act of aggression.

racial differences are ALWAYS going to exist. as mcuzi points out, it is due to cultural habits more than "color" and how ones reaction to that cultural element (music/mannerisms) affects the relationship. often, prejudices against a race are fueled by hatred within the race, or when differences occur, the obvious is cited as the reason, and hard to overcome because of a strong history of truth. the way to overcome "cultural" conflicts, is to be intelligent enough to rise above it. yor "multi cultural" friends would then do likewise, and it is no longer an issue!...oh, reminds me of this good polish joke..................[:P}

Some of you need to sometime in your life...the sooner the better....have your life depend on other people.
If you are ever in trouble and your life depends on someone else, you will find out you don't really give a rats ass if the person is a white anglosaxon protestant; a black ghetto Buddhist;or a brown catholic Mexican woman! You know you guys are right. We should embrace all people and tolerate them no matter what. Why I hope to search out and become friends with some pedophiles some day. They're just different, right? No need to condemn their practices. How about it? Anybody want to join NAMBLA? I thought not.

I personally do not care about who, what or where you are from. I do however have this habit of being cautious whenever I do not know you, whoever you are. I try to give everyone the benefit of the doubt but the level of such depends on how he/she acts or conducts himself/herself in my presence.
Self-preservation has always been man's first instinct. As much as I do not want to sound "unpolitically correct" if someone who dresses like a gangbanger, walks like a gangbanger and talks like a gangbanger approaches me and my family in a threatening manner in a place where a lot of crime is known to exist, I will have to think and prepare for the worst. Notice that I never mentioned race here for it does not matter, there will always be bad apples in the basket. I live in a predominantly affluent white neighborhood and I could not ask for better neighbors. Our property values has a steady climb because we as a community try to keep our individual properties pleasant and appealing by ourselves. I also agree with M1A-A1. If I do not speak your language and we have communication problems, it is not my fault. If a lot of people try very hard and in fact go to classes so they will learn how to speak English, why don't you??? It would be to your advantage to do so. |

I try to go throught the world "color blind", and I try to judge people by their character. And that usually works.
But in MY experience, about 85-90% of blacks I know or have met have an attitude problem, have poor work ethic, etc, and I don't particularly care for those ones. Thus, from MY experience, the chances of me becoming friends with a black person is less; even though I have nothing against them, and hold no grudges. Of all the heretofor replys I believe Big
Dozer66 and EdAviliaSr. taken together say it best. |

EdAvilaSr is wise beyond his years.
Years ago my car broke down in a really bad ass black area in NYC at 2:00 AM in the morning. One of NYC's finest drove by and yelled out the window that he would send a tow truck for me. I think he was afraid to stop and get out of his car. In any case no tow truck ever came. I tried to flag down some passing cars but no one would stop to help. About 3:30 AM a car pulls behind me and a black guy gets out. Oh great I think now I'm going to get mugged. Not only didn't he mug me he drove me to his friends gas station and called his friend to come down and get his tow truck. After they tow my car back to the station and secure it, he drives me to a friends house ten miles away. Now get this. Neither he nor his friend would take any money for their trouble. The guy says to me "Maybe you'll stop and help me one day." Good people come in all shapes, sizes and colors. When your ass is in a sling you won't care if your help is pink, purple or polka dot. |

I would write a lengthly reply, but McUzi said everything I would have said. (cheers to you bro).[:D]

My mother was operated on by a gifted black surgeon at a major NYC teaching hospital and medical school 23 years ago. He actually operated on her twice and saved her life. If she had refused to be operated on by a black she would probably be dead today.
Like I said before. Good people come in all shapes, sizes and colors. When your ass is in a sling you won't care if your help is pink, purple or polka dot. McTruth: There is some truth in what you said but you really need to get out of the ghetto and expand your horizons dude[:D] |

Pygmalion is not just a cute story. Self-fulfilling prophecies can be very powerful.
Say you own a business and have 30 employees. If you treat them like they are stupid, lazy and incompetent - after a while they will start to act more in line with your expectations. Even more interestingly, your preconceptions will be reinforced, and you will become even more convinced of their stupidity, laziness and incompetence. Don't tell me this is wrong - these are robust and empirically demonstrated effects - if I wasn't so lazy and incompetent, I could look up the studies for anyone interested. Now take those two simple phenomena and translate them to society at large and the issue of race/gender/whatever in particular - and you see the problem. |
|
I get along with anyone who isn't a 24 hour Ahole. I had a black friend stay a week with me on his vacation, he had only shot a gun once when he was 13, his Dads .357. He didn't have strong opinions or interests in fireams but has known about the family collection since we went to high school together. We needed to kill some time so I took him to the local range and checked him out on a MP5. Took all of 5 mins. of instruction before he was fine on his own. Good groups, good firearm discipline and nice control. This really ain't complicated folks. I would rather live next door to normal black people or whatever than say Charles Manson, Jesse Jackson or Aholes of any persuasion.
