I just got a toshiba netbook and want an external cd. This will be used mostly for backing up, I'm not going to be watching hi-def on my netbook.
THere are some on amazon for less than 20 bucks but I can't tell if they are windows 7 compatible and I have windows 7 home premium. I saw one for around 50 bucks that states it does not need a driver, which should make it windows 7 compatible right? I thought you could get an external cd drive the same way you get an external hard drive, but I guess there aren't many windows 7 drivers yet? The model netbook is the Satellite T115D-S1120. THe number of toshiba netbook configurations is greater than the national debt so that info might be of limited usefulness. |

My experience has been if it's plug n play it will usually work just fine. The OS will sense it and install the drivers it has or seek them online to get it running. It's just like adding any other hardware. I haven't seen that much difference between XP and 7. As long as you have good disc burning software on your system you shouldn't have an issue. Example: my home printer is an HP that has XP drivers. When I plugged it into my laptop (7) the OEM drivers are not compatible but 7 provided a generic driver for that model so it will function. It does not have full features (printer assistant, viewing ink levels, etc.) but it will print and communicates just fine with the generic driver for what I need it to do. |

If it was me buying one, I'd go to newegg.com an look at the reviews. In absence of any other info if I simply was at the store, I'd buy a usb2.0 one from a name brand mfg, which I will probably pay almost double, but would have a better chance of it doing what I want and not bitching about something. |
