my wife is likely getting a promotion at work and will need to ferry clients/potential clients around so i'll need to replace her 5yr old expedition with something nicer
it's between a tahoe and another expedition problem being is that the gov't stepped in and fucked everything up so neither has an engine option i actually want. one has a goddamned v6 and the other is a v8 only when it isn't a fucking v4 i think the ford looks better inside and out but i'm torn. what i want is a damned big block but nooooooooooooooo, they put those out to pasture even in full sized trucks (which she doesn't want, i offered to just buy her a crewcab diesel) thoughts on their powertrains? |

Turbos will spoil you. The torque is fantastic, but the new 5.3s aren't too shabby either. Expedition will probably ride better, doesn't it have a IRS?

Installing a turbocharger on a Tahoe is cheap, easy, and will make as much horspower as any street legal tires can stand.

You said it's for your wife to shuttle people around but then YOU want a big block. Is this vehicle for you or your wife? Is the company paying her mileage? If not then why do you want a v8 and why would the people she is shuttling around care?
... get the new Ram. With the 100,000 warranty, you're worry free

View Quote I'm in the same boat as you, looking ahead for when the wife's 2011 will need replacing in a couple of years. The 5.4 in hers is strong enough and I wish Ford did offer a 5.0 in the new Expeditions. But I'm warming up to the 3.5EB as they're getting a successful track record behind them. I think the 2018 getting the new 10-speed automatic might make the EB engine even more attractive by being able to keep the engine at peak power by using the additional gears. |

I wasn't really a fan of V6's until I had a work van with an ecoboost. That was a rocket! This is a large company with probably close to 100 vans, and they have switched most of their fleet over to ecoboost transits now. I'm sure they wouldn't do that unless they were pretty reliable.

Do NOT get the Tahoe with the 3.08 gears. Chevy website shows 3.42 available, 3.73 would be better. The 3.08 is sweet on the interstate where RPMs are high enough that it gets in the power band.
Wife drives a K1500 Suburban w/ 3.08 and it is terrible around town. I have to keep it in haul mode to make it shift at higher RPM or it lugs badly. I have had no problems with the AFM. Make sure you use a good oil. |

The new Lincoln Navigator will have the same v6 TT motor that the Raptor has. That's over 450hp...

You can still get a healthy 6.2 V8 in an Escalade. Not sure why the Tahoe/Subs only give you the baby 5.3 unless you can find a RST with the 6.2 but thats going to be pricey. The GMC Denali also has the 6.2 available. If you want to try Dodge, the Durango has 2 V8 choices, same with the Jeep GC.
You can get the 6.2 on anything now just have to pay. Go with that.
3.5EB > 5.3
3.5EB = 6.2 (or at least pretty close) At least as far as motor goes, I'd take a 3.5EB Expedition over a 5.3 Suburban every time. I'm not as sure about the 3.5EB versus the 6.2 GM V8, but I think for use here at 5k+ altitude I'd still take the ecoboost. |
Why would you disable the cylinder saver crap? Its literally imperceptible.
6.2 in Denali over EB all day. Proven motor design . Show me 10's of thousands EB vehi led with over 200K miles and I will change my opinion.

Last year we rented a '17 Expedition with the EB 3.5.....rent one...you will go buy one.

There is no replacement for displacement in the end but if a smaller engine comes with FI from the factory vs. an NA V8 that will need FI to keep up Ill take the smaller FI engine all day as its upgrade path to make more power is much cheaper.
My car puts down over 500hp to the crank and almost 600 torque, comes with a 6sp manual, RWD and is sexy as fuck. Cheap as hell also if you can replace fluids yourself and turn a wrench here and there. Of course if you want to put down 1000hp this mindset changes but seriously is 500hp all that bad for a daily? |
