The film "Strategic Air Command" starring James Stewart features the B36 and the B47 Stratojet.
I believe its the only film with either of these birds. |

my dad, possibly the most prosaic man on the planet, gets damn near poetic about flying that thing. he truly loved that airplane.

When the B47's became operational there was nothing on the Communist/Russian side that could touch them. Our crews were flying them over Russia and watching/listening to them get all tore up trying to intercept and shoot down the planes.
The Russians complained loudly enough that the US agreed to no longer conduct these overflights (spying) done by the US Air Force. Then they trained British air crews to fly the B47 and let the Brits do it for us. The MIG 17's finally came along and they could catch/shoot down the B47's and we lost some of the bombers and crews. |

I saw the last flying B-47 when it was flown in to Castle AFB in CA in '88 or '89. It had sat in the desert for years waiting to be a bombing range target before it was restored by the Castle Museum volunteers (canibalized parts off another B-47 next to it). It was cleared for a one time flight with a T-38 escort. The pilot was a retired Brigadier General who was one of the last to have flown a B-47. Watching it come in, do a low pass, and circle for a landing was awesome! The pilot did ding one of the engine cowlings when he landed... Really PO'd the guys who had put the plane back together. One thing about the engines, they took so long to spool up to speed, a small drogue chute was deployed on approach so the engines could be left at half power. If a go around was needed, the engines would only have to spin up from half throttle instead of idle - much quicker to get to power. When the plane landed, the drogue chute was used to pull out the big drag chute to slow the plane.

OPs choice looks dated now but for its era , yeah, its nice. Hard to believe that in the space of 50 years we went from Wright Brothers to that monster of a plane |

203 aircraft lost, 465 aircrew lost. And this was just on the B-47.
