Why are aircraft carrier conning towers called conning towers and not superstructures?

If you're talking about the structure sticking up from the starboard side of the flight deck, I've always seen it referred to as the "island".

The conning tower (from where the ship is 'conned') is part of the superstructure (all structure projecting above the main deck).
