Besides being the Pervert Police, I handle basic computer crimes, ID theft, and some other white collar crimes.
I’ve had two instances in the last month of an individual receiving in the mail a cashiers check for approx. $3G. The accompanying letter explains that they won the lottery, cash the check, and return a portion. Target persons denied being contacted via email or IM like sometimes before. We have seen these for a few years now out of Nigeria, but both of these came out of Canada. Anyone else getting them out of Canada? I’ve already contacted RCMP. You should have heard her French Canadian accent trying to talk to my KY/NJ dialect. She sounded cute.  Hay Striker, keep those fools up there in line, I’ve got enough on my plate.  Art in KY |

Had a guy a few weeks ago try to cash a Washington mutual cashiers check for 2500+ dollars. It was a fake check but looked real good.
His story was that he was an artist who was commissioned over the internet by a dude in London to paint a painting . He thought it was bullshit until he got a company letter head and the check saying pay yourself the 2K and send the rest to the shipper. sounded like crap until we went to the guys house and saw the letter and envelope post marked from Canada, no return address. His fishy story panned out.... go figure. Not much we can do here so we just took a info received report. |
