after about a 6month break from my guitar lessons i have decided i am going to play this damn thing if it kills me. i had a grand total of about a month before life got in the way.

so how long does it take for the fingers to stop getting sore and i stop fat fingering the chords? i am shooting for abotu 30 min 3 times a week, i'd do an hour but the fingers just don't agree with that schedule.

You're doing the right thing by not pushing yourself to play too long.  It is possible to overdo it and injure your hands, leading to persistent soreness.

Give it a couple of weeks, but be consistent.  Don't go for more than a day or two without playing.

You also can apply the interval training method.  Play for five or ten minutes, rest for a few, and then play for 15 minutes.  Take another short break, and by the time you hit it again you should be good and warmed up.

It depends on how long and how hard you play as well as what guitar you are using. Electrics or nylon strings won't take as long to work up calluses to. Steel string acoustics will take a little longer

I would say it will take about a week or two for them not to hurt a ton.

Hey man, that's most rock and country songs right there

Find songs that are simple that you like to listen to and learn them. It makes learning guitar a lot more fun when you are playing material that you like.

It seems like your fingers hurt like crazy for a week or so, then it just goes away.  Once the callouses are built up, you can shred for hours!!!

Definitely learn some songs you like, it really does make it a lot easier to stay interested.

You might also try to break your lessons in to a couple of parts. Take your book lesson, and play for a half hour. Then, take a n extra couple of minutes, and work on a song you like. Learn it a little at a time, and learn it correctly, and you'll be playing the whole song in no time.

I've also found if you play with somebody else, better or worse than you, it really speeds up the learning process.

I have been playing for over a year. My fingers hurt for over week and slowly the pain was no more. My advice is to make a commitment to play at least 3 times a week for 6 months. Don't just play for 5 minutes either. Go for at least 30 min sessions. If you do this I think you will be surprised on the improvement you will see.

I am playing a gig this weekend at a Roadhouse.  What does that make me?

Just keep playing until your fingers hurt, stop, pick it up later that day or the next & do it all over again.

And I don't remember how long it took for my fingers to get used to it. I was 14 at the time & I didn't give a shit about the pain at the time.

So just keep at it!

Find someone that plays different than you do and "jam" with them.  You aren't looking for gigs and you aren't playing for money.  Just get, somehow, around someone else that is finding their way around the fretboard.  You'll learn things from them that it seems you should have already known and they will learn the same from you.

Either Craigslist or roadtrip to Kansas to crash w/ Mrs. Dude and I..........Craigslist will probably be cheaper but I have backstraps in the freezer.

He's in the same state as The_Camp_Ninja, so there's another option.

it took me all of junior high school.  Don't get discouraged.  You know Camp Ninja and I will play with you whenever.

Speaking of which, I need a barrel tightened on a 16" upper that I have.  Perhaps I can come by one night soon and we can help each other out.  I can bring one of my guitars.

I'd allow a little more time.  Also, there are numerous ways to benefit from "fat fingering".  Most of my chording is done with one less finger than I am "supposed" to use.  My "A" is one finger.  Biggest thing:  learn, and learn WELL the first 4 or 5 basic open chords to the point that you can actually knock out a song or ten.  Once you hear yourself actually producing music, rather than noise, you will be further motivated to continue.  And I am always open to pickin' with ya!

ALSO: I tried numerous "lessons" and online tutorials, none of them did a DAMNED thing for me.  I simply don't learn that way.  Buying that pack of chord cards, laying them out on a coffee table, and truly learning the chord relationships by playing them progressed me as if by freakin' magic.  YIMMV, but don't oversell lessons, and undersell your own ability to self-teach.  There is a point at which you "get it", the tonal relationships, then it is just a matter of training your fingers.
