I started using my neti pot yesterday to relieve sinus conjestion and had been wondering what effect cayenne peppers would have to the water solution. So tonight I made a pot up with a couple shakes of the pepper and the normal ammount of salt. It was instant mucus and tear duct spewage. I couldn't do the full pot and had to stop because it burned so much.
I think I would add the pepper again in more dire circumstances but for some medium head conjestion its overkill. Posted Via AR15.Com Mobile |

The reason I did it was because I had read gargling water with cayenne pepper in it would help with a sore throat. One can only conclude it works for a neti pot too. But the nasal cavity is way more sensitve to the things than the mouth. Posted Via AR15.Com Mobile |

Oh believe me I've been congested bad enough that I will make this pepper brew again but maybe with a little less pepper.
The neti pot alone is an asset when you have a cold though. Quoted:
You're a lunatic. But an ingenious lunatic. I'm going to have to try that. I insist on maintaining a clean bill of health, so I'm an allergy denier. It gets bad enough where I'd say it's worth trading straight pain for congestion and irritation at times. Posted Via AR15.Com Mobile |

It takes a high level of miserable to do what you did.....
Got to hand it to you though I've been there....

You dumbasses do realize that there is a capasicum oil based nasal spray
that does the same shit, right? It's at your local drug store right near the Afrin. Look it up on google if you don't believe me. I've tried it... it burns like fucking hell, as expected. Nose runs like a sieve for a few minutes.... after the initial "what teh hell did I just dooz? " feeling... it's rather soothing.
It also does NOT cure a sinus infection. Been there, done that. -ZA |
| Honestly, I think the neti pot is a waste. Too much flows right through the lower end and none of it gets to the upper sinuses no matter what position I use. I have better luck with just using a syringe, tipping my head back then pinching off the nostrils and shaking it around. THEN blow it out. Iodine and saline is a good combination but I'd really like something that actually kills infection not just wards it off. |

Try hydrogen peroxide to kill the burn...
Trust me, this is not a good idea. It made sense at the time, you know - peroxide to kill off any germs in there. Even a 50/50 mix is still pretty painful... Not a Neti pot, I have the squeeze bottle thing. So I got it all the way back there. Then I felt lopsided so I went ahead and did the other side, knowing what would happen. I haven't used the thing much since that night. |

I was desperate. Didn't help at all and made things worse. I would have been better off snorting tabasco. |

Not the best idea ever... Capsaicin, which would be given off by the Cayenne, could cause severe damage to your sinus cavities. Best to just leave it with the packet they provide, just due to it's composition, it's a whole less likely to cause any damage to that soft tissue.
That being said, Neti pots are the best invention ever! |
