I think the most modern handgun is the FN 5-7, but it's been in design for a long time (the round was invented in the 80's, wasn't it?)
As for the most modern rifle... Um, maybe the FN SCAR, F2000, P90? ETA: as for "best designed" and "reliable" those are different things completely, and usually depends on your requirements, where reliability might be sacrificed for accuracy, etc. "Proven" generally needs a long time to be done, so it rules out "most modern." |

Pistol - CZ-52 (Name one other roller locking pistol)
Rifle - Garand. Doesnt get more "It just works" There you go. The 2 best weapons are both what....60 years old? Too many guns are trying to answer a question as yet unasked. I go for the KISS theory. |
