Maybe some ship made weapons that I can have fabricated by the mechanics? Tell your mechanics to get to work: 1 M2HB (with appropriate ship mounting) 2 1919A4 (with appropriate ship mounting) 1 Barrett M107 6 - 8 AR-15, or if acquired outside of CONUS through legal channels, 6 - 8 M-16s 1 P226 per crew member If they are really handy, mortars and a recoilless rifle would be nice additions. |

Bring plenty of firepower. If they won't let you go armed, don't go. I'm with this guy. If I were in your shoes and they weren't going to provide adequate vessel security, allow me the means to protect myself, or compensate say me for the substantial risk I'd tell them to pound sand. I'd then find myself another job. |

Quoted: We have a 6 month contract in Gabon, Africa. This is West Africa a little south of where all the pirate attacks are happening. We were told no security team will be on board the ship, no extra hazard pay, etc. I am a little concerned but have been in OIF and OEF so I have seen some shit previously but nothing like what may happen over there. Anyone have any advice for me about the area? Maybe some ship made weapons that I can have fabricated by the mechanics? |

The pirate area is East Africa, not west.
That said, you are sure to have compressed air there. Look up pneumatic guns, cannon, etc. A Potato at over 200 mph will take the fight right out of you. A pumpkin at the same speed messes up a fishing boat real bad. And "electric sprinkler valves" are not ITAR items. |

I'm sure they have pumps, lighters, and fuel tanks in Africa. |

Apparently the folks on the other side of the continent like what the Somalis are doing. |

(Reuters) - Pirates have hijacked an oil products tanker with 24 crew onboard off the Gabon coast, the vessel's operator said on Wednesday, the most southerly in a spate of raids in West Africa's Gulf of Guinea shipping zone. .... The Gulf of Guinea, which includes Nigeria, Ghana and Ivory Coast as well as Gabon, is a major source of oil, cocoa and, increasingly, metals for world markets. Unlike the Horn of Africa, international navies are not actively engaged in counter-piracy missions in the region. http://www.reuters.com/article/2013/07/17/us-tanker-pirates-gabon-idUSBRE96G0P220130717 |

The pirate hotspot is off Somalia . That is where the anti pirate patrols are being conducted by the multi-national Marine patrols.. That said, the entire continent of Africa is a toilet, and thieves and pirates are everywhere. Has been that way since before the USA existed, and will remain that way long after the USA ceses to exist. |

You will not have enough firepower, now matter how much you bring it won't be enough. |

Noooo, there is a piracy problem in West Africa, mostly around Nigeria. http://gcaptain.com/tag/west-africa-piracy The patrols occur off Somalia because more ship traffic goes through that area than usually goes past Nigeria. |

Look forward to the Al Jezeera video of your burning bodies being drug through the streets with your nuts cut off and stuffed in your mouth! FIFY! Get the picture? HELL FUCKING NO! Companies don't give a shit about you or your safety, just their bottom line profit! If anything happens YOU will be written off and forgotten. While you're at it, take a CLOSE look at your contract and/or company policies! Does it REQUIRE that you submit to BINDING arbitration in the event of employment dispute? If so, the company can pay NOTHING if anything happens to you over there and you and your family will be FUCKED by the arbitrator OF THE COMPANIES CHOOSING! FWIW "Arbitrators rule over 100 to 1 against individuals in disputes with companies. The reason is simple, you'll be gone tomorrow and they'll never see you again. BUT they'll do business with that company EVERYDAY. So if they want to stay in business they'd better rule overwhelmingly in the company's favor. |

You're not safe anywhere in Africa AT SEA OR ON LAND! The kidnappings for money are bad enough but now they're also killing captives just for sport! Somali might be the "hotspot" but all of Africa and the bordering seas are rife with murder and kidnapping. Especially of foreigners! <http://www.aljazeera.com/news/africa/2013/03/20133915595276511.html> Nigeria-based group Ansaru has said it has killed seven foreign hostages it seized on February 7 from a construction company in Nigeria, SITE Monitoring Service said. The group issued a statement in Arabic and English on an affiliate of the Sinam al-Islam network accompanied by screen shots of a video purporting to show the dead hostages, SITE said. One screenshot showed a man with gun standing above several prone figures lying on the ground. Ansaru, which has kidnapped other foreigners in the past, had blasted into the compound using explosives and abducted a Briton, an Italian, a Greek and four Lebanese workers, the largest number of foreigners kidnapped in the mostly Muslim north since violence by armed groups intensified two years ago. The group's full name is Jama'atu Ansarul Musilimina Fi Biladis Sudan, which roughly translates as "vanguards for the protection of Muslims in Black Africa". In its statement, the group said it had decided to kill the hostages, taken from the compound of a Lebanese construction company in the northern state of Bauchi, because of attempts by Britain and Nigeria to rescue them. |

We are NOT allowed to bring fire arms and although they do not check our bags while here in the GOM it was highly suggested to me to NOT try bringing anything on board due to big time problems if caught. I was told that we would NOT have ship security, NO extra pay, etc. I am highly unsettled by this. I know someone here knows the conditions over there which is why I asked. It was put to our crew that Gabon was a decent area and due to the port there being so valuable the navy patrols the waters etc. I know this is BULLSHIT and you guys are right about the company not giving a fuck about our safety to the fullest extent they should. They will probably make us sign paperwork stating that we give up our right to sue if something happens, etc. It was clearly stated that this was an all volunteer job and if you choose not to go you can find another job... How jacked up is that? Is there anything legal that can be done to protect my self before I go over there? I have an attorney fishing buddy that owns a law firm. I will be consulting with him shortly. My guess is they feel they can crew the boat with people who aren't so concerned. They don't have to give you security, but you don't have to go work the job. Sucks, but them's the breaks. |

Your best(and, surprisingly effective) weapons will be your fire monitors, if your vessel is equipped with them, and your hoses. I advise you to try and get your FRC in the water and practice with these. You'd be surprised at how effective you can be. What are fire monitors, people or equipment; and what are FRC's? |
