as you can see four and zero wont work.

Shift plus those numbers also doesn't work.

the problem seems to be transient though... sometimes they work sometimes not.

see zero worked that time.

I'm not doing anything else but typing this post.

I haven't spilled anything on the keyboard.  It doesn't feel any different than it always has.

pressing harder and pressing and holding have no effect.

the keyboard is about 1 year old.

any ideas?

Unless this is a laptop, probably easier to replace it honestly...

However, what operating system are you using?

What type of cable does the keyboard use to plugin to the computer?

It's a ps2 keyboard with an extension so it can reach the tower.

yeah I could probably run out and get another 10 dollar keyboard but I don't want too.  If I can fix it I'd prefer to do that.

I don't see any reason to use usb until they stop putting ps2 connectors on motherboards.

They actually have started not putting PS/2 connections on motherboards

I don't think it will be long until they just do USB and throw in a few PS/2 to USB adapters

I would try switching out the extension and see if that makes a difference

I haven't seen a ps2 k/b in, like, forever.

the only thing I can imagine causing this is something under the key-cap causing it to not actuate completely. Perhaps pop off the offending key-caps and see if there's anything under them?

turn the machine off.  unplug all the keyboard cables plug them back in.  turn the system on and see if it works better.   after that try a new keyboard.   if it still doesn't work your keyboard control is shot.

Sometimes the contacts get stuck or sticky.  Try "gently" banging the keyboard on a hard surface (with about as much force as dropping it 2 feet or so).
