I hate messing with the damn things, but try opening iTunes and then attach the ipod to see if it makes any difference. Also sometimes at least in my case if I have a media card reader attached it throws it off or tries to take a drive letter already assigned to the card reader.

or come into this thread, shit on the iPod, say 'get something better' without actually offering any insight into what is 'better'.

I tunes is t3h suck.  You could use Winamp to transfer files to your iPod.  I haven't tried it yet, but itunes is a POS.

I personally use a Creative Zen Vision:M. My intent wasn't to promote any particular MP3 player, just to express that I think he would be much better off with one of many different players.

Check your settings to see if you are set up to automatically detect the iPod when it'c connected.

I like iTunes and the iPod. They both rock.

I was offering a serious solution to his iPod problem!

Tell me my solution wouldn't work...

Was the battery completely depleted?  If so, it won't be recognized until it's at least partially recharged.

Too late for it to matter now, but you may have been able to just reset the iPod. Can't remember how to do it right now, but it's like holding the PAUSE and MENU buttons together for 5 seconds or something. Reboots the iPod without wiping the songs.

Just remembered.

Buying another player isn't going to convince iTunes to recognize his iPod.

Duh.  Is the iPod looking for more appreciation?  Is the iPod going to form a picket line?  It is going to smash the windshields of the other players for being 'scabs'?
