i noticed quite a few times on EE and other boards people ask the seller why they are selling.  Does it really matter? would it make a difference?  would you answer?

I am selling this gun because a girl touched it and it now has cooties.  $1400 firm.

No different than selling any other used goods.

"Why are you selling this truck?"

"Why are you selling this mower?"

"Why are you selling this dog?"

"I heard guns kill people and I ain't going back to prison."

I am usually honest as to why I'm selling a gun.

sometimes it's about money, sometimes it about I don't like it.

I don't like Glocks, they're fine guns, I just don't like the way the grip feels compared to other guns.
I had one once and sold it. I thought I would be one of the cool kids if I had a Glock. I was wrong.

I've been fortunate enough to only sell/trade guns that I just don't like anymore or have a fancier similar version gun of the type I'm selling.

ETA: had a buddy that moved away that we used to horsetrade back and forth because he was only 'allowed' to have X number of guns. That was a hoot.

Because.....

This gun is too heavy, unreliable, likely to get you killed when you need it most, looks ugly, trigger sucks, can't hit a barn with it from inside the barn, the safety doesn't work and it fires randomly, it kicks like a mule, it blew up on me once, High Points have better ergonomics, it costs more than 10 times my other gun that is twice as good, my wife hates it, my kids are afraid of it, I only bought it because it was cool in a dinner pic, and it's arfcom approved.

eerrr.... so, yeah, it's a great gun, but I'm just looking to thin the herd a bit.

would not an answer like this weaken your position in negotiation?

Possibly they are trying to learn if the gun has any issues. But if the seller doesn't divulge that information in the ad I wouldn't expect a straight answer when asked. It seems like 87% of guns for sale only have less than 200 rounds though them anyway.
The only gun I have ever sold I sold to a shop that gave me a good price for it. But if someone did ask I would answer because I want the money instead.

Possibly if you were desperate. I'd go with I want the money, I don't need it. Just like I don't need the gun either, but I will keep it.

ha! nice, although that one would be a keeper. I've had that thought " if someone breaks in right now & I defend myself with this, would I be OK with that.  kinda like- If I hole-in-one with this chewed up range ball would I still mount it on a plaque?

Meh it's fine to sell guns you don't want.

I sold an LC9 after I bought a shield and used the funds towards a VP9.

I have toyed with the idea of selling my glock 36. I never shoot or carry it anymore. But I know I will never get anywhere close to the stupid high MA price I paid for it. And I don't think it could legally go back into MA to be sold even though it's on an FA-10 form there somewhere.

I tell them, usually its either I don't use it much anymore or I have my eye on something else, whats the harm?

Of course.

If I was selling it because it was defective in some way it would have been disclosed in the ad or previous communications anyway.

Answers range from "I thought I would like it, but I didn't" to "Because racecar".

Not much good over text medium.

But if you're buying in person and spring the question at the right time, and know how to read people, you can sometimes glean some info about what you're getting into.

They probably just want to make sure it wasn't a lemon.

There are some people out there that will sell a gun that they knw doesn't work, without disclosing that to the buyer.

"Because I'd rather have the $ than the gun."

I've been known to use the "that's my business, do you want it or not" line as well, if the guy buying seems like a shark.

I never sell guns, but in other sales I always tell the truth - I find that the truth serves me well.
