Probably time to upgrade from my $10 walmart go-phone since the battery life is dwindling. It's been a good 3 years though!
Is there a way to get an iPhone, used or otherwise, and insert the AT&T sim card so that I don't have to be in a 2-3 contract on the data plan? Do I even have to have a data plan or can I just choose to use it wifi if I need the internet? Any ideas? |

You can use an iPhone without any phone/data plan but then it is just an ipod with a built in GPS chip. I use my old iPhone 3GS like that and it does work great as when on wifi I can browse the web or when driving the GPS drives my TomTom Ap, and it will still dial 911. It does not however make other calls and no data unless on wifi.

Quoted: Quoted: Get a used iPhone, go with WalMart Straight Talk. Buy their SIM card and the flat $45 a month plan. Unlimited data, unlimited talk, unlimited texts. That'll work? Yes, am in the process of doing it right now. It's fucking hilarious in a way. AT&T is charging me over $100 a month for everything when you include all the taxes. No taxes through StraightTalk. Here's the kicker. It runs on the AT&T network......LOL. It's to my understanding the only thing that does not work on a locked AT&T phone is MMS. http://www.iphoneonstraighttalk.com/ http://brandontypeshere.com/2011/03/use-straight-talk-service-on-an-iphoneandroid-att-phones/ ETA: The iPhone in question has to be an AT&T phone, the Verizon and Sprint ones will not work due to them being CDMA, as oppossed to the GSM version that is offered by AT&T. |

Yep, but only 2 gb data on that plan Check out Howards forums That's 2GB a month? Right? I have had my phone on AT&T since March and for the total life of the phone have only done 4.5 GB. |

You are going to make we want to try this with my old 3gs!
Can I confirm, you don't need to hack your iphone? No problems with itunes or other updates? I am tied into my AT&T contract for at least another year with my 4s but really I don't use much data as most of the time I am under wifi. |

This is a great idea, wonder why more people aren't clued in on this!?! Thanks for your advice - I will definitely look into this as I hate getting in 24 month contracts! |

Correct, the only hack is to get the MMS service to work, and there are ways to do that jail broken or not. |

iPhone on straight talk
Used the iBackupBot software and everything works. No jailbreak required |

You can have an iphone without a data plan. I have done just that. Bought a prepaid cell phone. Activated it. Took out the SIM and put it in the iphone. Turned on wifi and connected it to my access point and it activated without issue. Iphone 5 uses a micro sim. So you would have to buy it unlocked and use it on tmobile. |

I bought an unlocked 4S and used it on whatever ATT calls their prepaid voice service. |

bob200587 - Why the smart phone with no data? Well, I love Apple products and don't want to spend over $300 a year in a two year contract paying for internet access (that I won't need that often) when I have free wifi at home, work, and most other places now...
If you saw what I was moving from you would understand that just the wifi alone would be a significant upgrade for me. Who knows, maybe after a few weeks I feel that I would need the data plan anyway. But with this straight talk option, seems like the unlimited talk, unlimited text, and 2.0 of data will cost less than my 1400 minutes and 200 text and zero package with AT&T....
Cavalry99, can't thank you enough for the tip! Got the used iphone off craigslist already! |

You can use the gophone sim if you want to use AT&T –– I just walked into a store and told them I wanted a microsim, they sold it to me without any trouble. They did tell me it wouldn't work with an iphone, but it works just fine with my 4S with a gevey unlock sim carrier. 50 bucks a month for 1gb of data IIRC, plus whatever you spend on voice. |

| Actually, you used to be able to do it. A couple of years ago when I bought my used 3G, I simply pulled my SIM card out of my RAZR and installed it in the iPhone. I had no smart phone data plan, but I used it like that for almost a year before AT&T caught on and forced me to buy a smart phone data plan. The only things that I used the phone for were calls and text messages, and if I had to use internet, I found a wireless network to join. The data plan wound up raising my bill by $25. |
