I'm tired of it, ios 5 has pretty much killed out my iphone 4.  So i'm going to make the best of a shitty situation and take a swan dive off of the iphone wagon and try to find something else.  I would prefer a phone with a little more options for customization, also something a little more faster and crash free.  Ive looked on at&t's site at the Galaxy S II, but I would like some insight from the hive to help me walk the righteous path and make wise choice on my next phone purchase.

Funny, I'm completely opposite.  I'm so tired of my Droid X and it's problems I'm seriously considering getting another iPhone.

They all end up sucking, no matter the make.

I have never been a 'smart phone' fanboy.  My last cellphone was 3+ years old, and it was outdated when I bought it.  I wanted it for phone calls and text messages, and very few of either.

I bought a Galaxy S II last week.

I've looked at iPhones, and always thought 'Meh.'

The Galaxy S II is one helluva nice piece of kit.

gs2 for at&t is a good choice, as is the galaxy nexus.

BEST advice: create a gmail account if you don't have one, start putting your contacts into gmail, start using the calendar and sign up for google voice

when you get your phone and sign in with the gmail account all your contacts will be there

iphone makes it stupid to do that though because when you enable google sync itunes wipes your iphone's contacts before syncing.

And that's the hazard of combining a computer with a phone.

I've never had a computer that was trouble free AND useful, it could be one or the other at best.

Ive always been an avid iphone fan and have upgraded to the next model since my first 3g, but the iphone 4 is where I will have to stop.  Im constantly having trouble with the home button, programs crashing, locking up, etc.  The Galaxy S II is really appealing to me so the next step is going to the store and getting hands on time with it, and maybe take it from there

I have a Galaxy S (original) and there are only a few very minor quibbles I have with it. It is a very good phone. I would LOVE to get the new Galaxy Nexus or Galaxy S II. I'll probably wait until used ones are $250-$300ish though.

After listening to the GD crowd, I thought it would be a toss-up between the SII and iP 4.  After using the S II for a week, it's not even close.

Hundreds of free apps out there as well.

The Speech to Text feature for text messages, searches, web, are top-notch.  I've used PCs for 20 years, and remember when the Amiga Voice chip was 'Star Trek' level of awesome.

The Speech to text is 99% accurate for me.  Eliminates my main bitch about cellphones...small keyboards.

If I type at all, it is to backspace to correct words that I burbled.

Pretty much what drove me away from the iPhone.

I had a 3GS and updating to iOS 4.x killed the battery life on the device.  Now, the Achilles heel of any smartphone is the battery but I grew tired of the Apple talking points of the "new" iOS having no adverse effect on battery life.  Bullshit.  Shortly after that fiasco, I was due for an upgrade and I went Android.

I scrapped the stock ROM and installed a nightly CM7.  I was very happy with the customization, removal of the bloatware, increased capabilities and battery life!  Whee!  I have since upgraded to a stable CM 7.1 ROM and can't see every going back to an iDevice.

You have to remember, with apple they basically have a methodology where everyone really is supposed to trash their old product as soon as the new one is out.  They simply don't "care" about older devices because they are dead to them as soon as the replacement is ready.

Android manufacturers do leave phones by the wayside as well, however, you can guarantee there is an alternative rom out there with a newer base version of android.  Or put another way, there's every reason the last day you use an android phone it's going to be faster than the day you bought it (assuming you owned it for a year or two haha).

I've had to do factory resets 3 times in a month now and it keeps eating the SD cards.  I mean, complete wipe, can't use anymore type eating.  When this happens, I can't use most of my apps that require the SD card to write to.

To be fair, I had problems similar to the OP with the iPhone 3G I had before the X.

You ever check the app store app for updates?
There are always a slew of app updates when there is an OS revision-iOS5 has been no different.

That sounds like a defective handset. My 4 was flawless the entire time I owned it, including the week and a half on iOS 5 before I received my 4s. The only gripe I feel I can legitimately make is that iOS 5 and it's infatuation with location services seems to drain the battery faster, and the lipophobic coating on the screen only lasts 6~9 months.

Other than those gripes, I never encountered any crashes or any of the other symptoms the OP mentions.

I check at the least once a day for updates especially after they all had to be revised after ios5.  I figure I gave it a good run, and used it enough to feel that I need something else.  The only problem is I went from an old send call/receive call flip phone to the iphone, and do not have any experience with any other type of smartphone.  My Capt at work went from the iphone 3gs to a droid os phone and loves it, hes been trying to convert me for a bit.  I guess now is gonna be as good of a time as any

There is no doubt in my mind that the iphone is a great piece of hardware, its just the constant issues that i mentioned. granted it could be a defective device but i'm very tired of dealing with it (my wife's i4 has the same issues as well)

With the exception of the OG Droid, which was vanilla Android, the bitch has not been about Moto's hardware, but instead, the custom skin they put on Android.  Most in the Android world agree that Moto's build quality is second to none, but the custom Moto Blur is hurting the user experience.  Once I canned Moto Blur for CyanogenMod, my Droid2 has been a great piece of equipment.  It's fast, has great battery life and pulls a signal in areas where Samsung and HTC phones have long given up trying.  If you are concerned about the quality of the phone in your smartphone it simply does not get better than a Moto.  This phone, like the OG Droid, has been incredibly durable having survived more than a year with regular drops onto concrete and even a couple of times being thrown across the room.  Looking at the durability upgrades Moto is putting into the Droid RAZR, I expect it to continue to produce the best, most durable hardware.

multiple crashes from multiple apps (I always restart at least once everyday, and have every available app up to date for ios5).  my phone will randomly lock up and shut down, my contacts will sometimes lose the name but not the phone number.  Ive experienced alot of freezing up with the new ios, and have done everything that I know of to remedy the problem.  Maybe ive just had the bad luck of getting a shitty phone on more then one occasion, and I do know previously I was happy with the apple product.  but I'm no longer satisfied with it and am trying to find an alternative route to the same destination

well I left BestBuy just a bit ago.... the day started out at 10am at the BestBuy Mobile store in the local mall, I went in wanting the Samsung Galaxy SII, the young lady that worked there explained the price and what not, also said they could take my iphone in on trade as well, so I agreed and went forth with the deal planning to pay around 150-160 bucks after tax.   ok now fast forward three hours later (store had a massive meltdown after the last step of the transaction just before it being complete). So at this point im getting a little agitated, but calm senses prevailed and I assured the staff that I wasn't mad at them but had the urge to hit there pc's with a bat (they took the humor well).
Soon after the home office for best buy called and advised them to give me a good discount and some giftcards.  After it was all said and done, with a 35 dollar case, insurance, screen protector thing, etc. etc., I ended up walking out of the store with phone in hand spending less than 60 bucks.  All in all the headache was worth it in the end and working in my career field has taught me a bit of patience as well.  by the way I love the phone!

If you have any questions there are a lot of guys here that know the hell out of Android.
I'd also recommend signing up on a site like Android Central or Rootzwiki (If you get into rooting). There are so many things you can do with Android and you cannot learn them all by yourself.

I love this damn phone. Plus the bare assed Android OS is nice coming from Moto-blur.

Have you tried having your phone serviced? iOS 5 is working great on my 3Gs, friends' 4's and 4s's.

This, fresh wipe of a smart phone can do wonders.

Yup.

iPhone 3G to Droid X to Iphone 4

2G, 3G, 3Gs, Dell Streak , 4 with iOS5.
Ipod Touch, 3G, 4G........never had a problem eventhough for most of that I was line maintenance for an airline, I was in rain, snow, heat and extreme cold.  The phone always worked except the time I was in Nebraska and ATT didn't have any service.  Otherwise, have always worked.

Now the people I know that have droids and other android phones are always bitching about them.
