Well, according to internet sources, the 2nd Generation iPhone will be released tomorrow during the WWDC Keynote address. The rumors state the phone will include the features the first generation iPhone should have included. I believe it will be impressive to say the least. I'll update tomorrow after the keynote address. So who will be buying one? IBTNN95P

Yep, that is very foolish of them. I would *consider* buying one if they had them with my carrier. I don't really need anything they offer, but still...the geek factor is to much to pass up.

I'm gonna stick with my first gen iPhone (4GB) for a while. The software update will be available to current iPhones. I should have everything the new phone will have, except the hardware upgrades. Almost everything else that was lacking (IMHO) were things that the software could do. Like all the BlueTooth profiles - A2DP, GPS (serial), wireless sync) and the landscape view in EVERY application. Typing on the screen is SO much easier in landscape! I'll be looking at updating my phone tomorrow. If the next generation phones deliver well on the hardware, and get subsidized so the base model is $200, I may upgrade in a few months. Send my current iPhone to my sister in NYC. She'd love it! |

More on this . . .While Cingular (er, AT&T, but you know what we mean) couldn't seem prouder of its iPhone exclusivity, apparently Apple's first choice was Verizon, but the two companies couldn't agree on a deal that worked for both Companies. "We said no." Said Jim Gerace, a VZW VP. "We have nothing bad to say about the Apple iPhone. We just couldn't reach a deal that was mutually beneficial." Talks began as far back as two years ago, but Apple's demands were steep. They also give us an idea of what exactly is behind the Apple / Cingular agreement: Apple wanted a percentage of monthly service fees, control over distribution that would limit iPhone sales to Apple and Verizon stores, and even some control over service and support for iPhone customers. "They would have been stepping in between us and our customers to the point where we would have almost had to take a back seat ... on hardware and service support," say Gerace. Cingular doesn't quite see it that way, so perhaps Apple changed its conditions a bit when it started courting Cingy. Says Mark Siegel, a Cingular spokesman, "I don't want to leave the impression that these (iPhone) customers are not ours. They are." Mark also mentioned that Cingular would field calls related to wireless service, and that "We think this is a win for Apple, and it is a win for Cingular." I already have one, and am extremely happy with it. The new 3G and GPS, along with the impending onslaught of 3rd party software, will make it even more appealing. The only question you have to ask yourself is "How is AT&T reception in my area?" Beyond that, it's the best smartphone available. |

What does it for me about the iPhone is the form factor. I love the form factor. I have a blackberry that I have for work, and it does what it does pretty well, but it's a fugly unit. I hope the next gen is the same or even slimmer. We'll hopefully see tomorrow! |
Sadly, it's still completely locked down by Apple. The new iPhone will be aswell. I'll keep my Series 60 Nokia N95. |
I've been reading a lot of the gadget blogs the past few days and everything is very tight lipped. Nothing, no blurry shots, no UI shots, nothing. Rumor is though the back in no longer metal, but now plastic, and it's a hair thicker. |
The apps will let it do what smart phones do. You won't have to 'unlock' it or hack it. |

You a developer, Arcteryx? I've taken a look at the SDK and it's pretty impressive. I've already got a 1st gen iPhone, but i think I'll see how the iPhone2/Android thing shakes out over the next several months. Google looks like it's slow out of the gate, but I don't do a huge amount of data on the existing edge network, so I can live with it for a while. |
No i'm not but I have a friend in Canada who is on the software development team for the iPhone. He won't tell me much but I know a little. |

Is it going to be another super cool entertainment device that has a phone and pda tacked on, almost as an afterthought? Or is it going to be a serious business device as well as a serious entertainment device? If the former I'll stick with my Treo 700, if the later, and IF it's not tied to AT&T, I may give it a try. But to be honest, the Treo does all I can ask of it and more, it's rock solid both software and hardware wise and it can take a beating and still keep working. Mine looks like Napoleon_Tanerite refinished it.

Fat chance of that happening with the closed network that Verizon and Sprint operate. Verizon is switching to LTE in the next 5 years or so though which is the future GSM standard. Guess you'll be waiting a while. :) |
With the newest software update just around the corner it will be a very serious business tool/phone. It's worth taking a look at. I'll be in line to get one on the 15th. Review to follow shortly after. |

Don't forget 32Gig. The current ones have only 16Gig. Also, the current models don't support multimedia messages and don't take video. Not sure if the next gen ones change any of that. I have heard some rumors, but wait to see.............................. One word, Cisco.

I can wait 5 years. I mostly use my phone to talk. By then the iphone fad will have died down and they won't be $400+ anymore. |
Apple is going to let the carriers subsidize the new Iphones like all other cell phones are done so they will be considerably cheaper. |
