Today is supposed to be the release date. Anybody else waiting?

I'm really looking forward to the notification bar that they stole from Android.

iOS 5

Hopefully it won't kill battery life like iOS 4.x does.

Very interesting. But the last big OS update fucked up my battery life. Might wait a few days on this one to see what others are saying.

That's a smart move for any OS update on any platform.

With iPhones, is it a carrier-specific update, or does one just get the goods straight from Apple?

I've been running the beta for a while now & upgraded to the gold master release on some of my iDevices.

It's turned my 3GS into a pig but for full disclosure, the 3GS is still running beta.   Battery life is slightly better but the reaction time for anything is horrible.   Runs like a champ on our other iPhone 4's.

I'll probably wait a few days to update my iPad2. My iPhone4 I won't update until there is a JB and MyWi working on it.

WAIT. I'd wait a month before you download it on anything but the newest iPhone.

4.x fucked my 3G to death and they of course didn't offer support.

Nah, if it jacks up my phone I'll just get the 4s. I'm due for an upgrade anyway.

The last iOS update (4.3.5) really screwed my battery life until I figured out what was happening.  Now I can go 3 to 4 days on a single charge.  If you guys with bad battery usage are hooking up to an Exchange server let me know and I'll post what I did to get my battery life back.

I won't be jumping to get iOS 5 either.

Battery life problem on the i4? Tell you what, anyone that wants to trade an iP4 on Verizon for a Droid 2 because of battery life LMK. No battery life complaints with my 4. It looks like upgrading to Lion on the Mac Mini is required to take advantage of the iCloud though. I'm not too keen on that at the moment but iOS 5 looks like it's going to be sweet. Not having to sync is a big improvement.

The 4s with the Siri feature looks like it will put an end to all the stupid questions women ask. Now they can just ask their phone

I detect an infinite loop degrading performance of the sandwich manufacturing facilities.

I'm betting it's turn push off.  And just use fetch every 30 minutes or manually.

That's a no-go for me.

I get 2-3 days out of my Verizon Droid 2 if I use it a lot, I can get 7 days out of my Droid2 if I don't use it.

I don't care that apple totally completely copied android's notification bar and pull down menu, but it is funny how they think everyone copies them.

I read that was the usual release time. I have to be to work at 12:30. Guess the update will have to wait till I get home.

I'll keep checking this thread though so keep my posted guys.

Yep, the pulldown 'tray' is straight out of Android, but it doesn't need the banner or the weather, since widgets take care of those things.

The lock screen on Android, by default, doesn't display any info, however there are apps that can add that functionality.  I don't use any, and don't feel the need to.

iPhones are great hardware, and are capable of pretty much everything Android can do... but Apple just hasn't added all the functionality yet.  I could probably name half a dozen things that Android has done from the start that Apple has added one at a time along the way... all while touting it as a 'great new feature!'

The good part of it is that Apple tests the shit out of it, and mostly, it works very well when they release it.

ETA:  Battery life on my Droid X usually ends up at 70% after a regular work day, so I'd probably get two full days out of it.  I use it as my alarm clock on the desk dock connected to power, so it gets juiced up every night anyway.

What REALLY helps battery life?  Get a tablet.  You'll play with the tablet more than your phone!
