"Coke" is correct for Koch. And I pronounce Heckler as "Heckler".

Heckler is pronounced just as it looks, like a heckler from the bleachers at a ball game. Koch is pronounced like "coke", the drink. Or you can simply say H&K. >gg<

I once spoke with a rep from a distributor for HK, and he says "coke."
Link Posted: 4/29/2002 10:49:50 AM EDT
The German pitches in: "_Heck_-la' _oo_ndh KoXh" (short o, like in dock, and the Xh sounds like you're trying to get a piece of popcorn out of your throat. There's no such sound in English, as far as I know.) "coke" is definitely wrong.

Being from south Texas.....Hick-ler Cock.[:D]

Yeah, your're right. The HK distributor rep said the samething; there is no such eqivalent sound in English, but he said that "coke" would be close enough.
Link Posted: 4/29/2002 11:06:01 AM EDT
yea, english does not have a "hock a lugie sound".
Link Posted: 4/29/2002 12:06:05 PM EDT
In England they call it "The Hockler"...weird but true. Saw it on one of those Dicovery shows on the SAS.

I can resolve this. I pronounce it any damn way I feel like it at the time. Since I am always correct, that pronunciation is correct at that time and until further notice. Currently "Coke" is correct. Deutschland and their flugie sound be damned.

Seen this in print as well. Brit slang plural is "Hocklers".

Leupold. Lew (the name) - pold(as in the word "bold,") Not Leo pold.[stick]

Didn't Ed Koch, ex-NYC mayor, pronounce it "coach"? Perhaps his name became Anglified after a few generations.

Heckler & Koch, Inc. 21480 Pacific Boulevard Sterling, Virginia 20166 United States of America Telephone: (703) 450-1900 FAX (703) 450-8160 You give them a call tomorrow and report back to me how they answer thier phone. If they don't pronounce thier name correctly be sure to tell them that you lived in Germany and that they are incorrectly pronouncing thier name.

Not only did I live there, my native language IS GERMAN, so trust me on this one, not some American sales guy. Rest assured that German dependances of American companies butcher the pronunciation just as well. Can you say "Ah-Tschee Hard=Waa=Re"?

Remember, they don't live in Germany, they live in Deutschland. I prefer Heckler and Kotch. Yes I know it's wrong. So what? This is America. A Gyro is a Gyro, NOT a Yeee-ro. Paris is Parris, not Pah-ree. Van Gogh is Van-Go, Not Van-Gogchhzhhh... Pronunciations get Americanized.

Good point, Kinky-Nuttus.

It's pronounced "Kotch"! Why? Because that's the f'ing way that sounds best to me, and that's the way that it looks like it should be spelled. If you don't like the way I pronounce it, then too damn bad! Heckler and "Coke" sounds like a mixed drink!

I'm surprised nobody has posted this - here is THE definitive answer from HKPRO.COM complete with a WAV file of the pronounciation! http://hkpro.com/koch.htm In english, "coke" is correct, as has been said. In German, it's the hock a lugie sound at the end instead of the "k".
