Alright, I am on a sub-tropical island thus the air is humid and its a salt water environment. I have a motorcycle that has some light rust spotting on all chrome pieces from sitting covered for a while.

what do you suggest in order to remove the rust spotting without destroying the chrome?

If you got rust the chrome is all ready  pitted.

Chrome bumper polish works well esp with the use of power tools.

I've always had good luck with "Simichrome".

If the actual rust is coming from small nicks in the chrome plating there isn't too much you can do, but stay on top of cleaning it. Anything you try that "kills" rust will require some sort of top coat to keep it from coming back.

I like Turtle Wax Chrome Polish & Rust Remover... it's cheap and always available.

Pretty versatile stuff too, it's a liquid paste and I use it on all sorts of stuff. I'd say it's pretty gentle.

Mother's also makes a good polish, but it's costlier.

If you don't want to do the scuff-n-buff routine, could try Navel Jelly
followed up with chrome polish to protect from further rust.

Simichrome paste and Nev-r-dull wadding are must haves for a motorcycle owner IMO.

My detailer uses 000 steel wool on bikes that I send him.

Follow it up with a chrome polish and it'll look like new.

Steel wool and paste wax.  Don't over-think it.  Steel wool will not scratch chrome.

I have heard this works pretty well, I have used Never-Dull and a product called Flitz with pretty good results.

My wife's bug had bumpers that appeared to be entirely made of rust, but she spent an afternoon with some steel wool and chrome polish and the parts she finished look almost new. Be prepared for a lot of scrubbing if it is bad, though.

This.  I have used it for 30 years with excellent results.  It will also help protect chrome from rusting.

Steel wool, then clean and dry everything with acetone to get any residue off. Mask off anything you don't want painted and hit yer chrome with some clearcoat (aerosol cans should be available).

Know a few folks who live beachside here and it is their preferred method of chrome protection.

YMMV

ETA, alot of folks also give into the rusting chrome and get their stuff powdercoated, which lasts and takes the weather for a very long time,
