Step 1:
Get the serial number and confirm it was built before Sept. 14 1994. Get a signed statement from the seller that it was in fact assembled with the evil features before the ban.
Step 2:
Check the Feedback postings on the Magazines for sale forum to see how others rate the seller, ask around on here about them.
Step 3:
Pay with a postal money order, if you do get ripped off you have more legal options to go after him.

If you're buying from out of state you'll have to go though an FFL who you might arrange with the other party to hold rifle and money and do the exchange after a three day inspection period. The seller is more likely to trust a licensed dealer than an individual. The money order is a good thing - it's a bigger crime to do mail fraud.

Get the sellers real name and real address, plus his work and home phone numbers.
Cross the address using the Yahoo MapQuest search.
Cross the sellers name with the Yahoo people search.
Call the seller at both home and work.
Have the seller either fax, email, or regular mail you a bill of sale with an EXACT description of what you are buying.
Pay only with a USPS money order.
Cross your fingers and don't step on any cracks on the way to the Post Office....

All this said, with the exception of maybe 2 or 3 people I can think of, the bunch here on AR15.COM are some of the most honest folks to deal with. I feel better sending my money to someone on here than an ad in Shotgun News.
