You need 3D Studio Max made by Discreet.  It's a 3D mesh\animation\rendering software package primarily used in the games industry and to some extent movies and TV for CGI effects shots.  It's very expensive so unless you can find a crack, you're sol.  A .max file is NOT an image file.

she trying to figure out how to use a scnner told her to check that the file format is set to .jpeg.
that should sorrect the problem correct?

A .jpg should be fine.  That's pretty much a "universal" image format.  I can't figure out where the .max file came from......unless it's some sort of weird fringe image file I've never heard of (I've worked in digital art for over 10 years).  Strange.  I've not ever heard of two different file types with the same extension, so I doubt that's the case.  I'm just perplexed as to why\how a scanner would give you the option of saving something with the .max extension.
