Download and run Ad-Aware or Spybot, they seem to work really well.

Get AVG antivirus as well to clean out the fungus.

The advice given here is sound. If none of it works, just re-install Windows from scratch. While pondering that last part, consider:

Go to Start->Run.
Type in 'msconfig' and click "ok".

Take a look at the "startup" tab. This will show everything starting with windows.

A google search on each executable should give you enough info to determine if you need it or not.

I still use Windows 98 (because I like it). What I've done is to open MSCONFIG... for 98 you go to Start --> Run --> and type in "MSCONFIG"... I can't say for sure if it's the same for XP.

When the System Config Utility appears, you can click on the Start Up tab to see everything that loads automatically when Windows starts. Technically, you should only need to have these things checked:
System Tray, Task Monitor, Scan Registry, Load Power Profile, and Multifunction keyboard. All others can be unchecked, and then hit Apply and OK. This doesn't remove the programs; it just takes them out of the start up group.

You might want to run Defrag also. I'm guilty of putting this off myself, and I'll run it again one of these days.

Don't forget to clean out your cache by deleting Temporary Internet Files, and then empty your Recycle Bin.

In MSCONFIG, Startup, as well as in Task Manager, you'll see a lot of things running you have no idea what they are, if they should be running and whether they are essential to your computer's operation or not.  To find out, look at either or both of these:
