| Since the tinfoil is out to a degree in this thread already allow me to throw this out there. You know with what we now know the NSA can do, it would probably be a pretty simple matter for them, or even a talented private hacker, to hack the computer on a modern car and lock the doors and jam the accelerator to the floor. You would be trapped in your car with no way out. You couldn't even turn it off or throw it in neutral as that the computer would be in control. And then when you crashed at 140 mph, all evidence would be destroyed. |

Steering and brakes work too. |

I remember this happening to Toyota's a few years ago. Stupid people can't shift their car into neutral and turn the key. Stupid people like to post stupid things...... Plus brakes are not fly by wire. Edited for CoC You ain't driving much car if the brakes would do anything but burn up if fighting against an engine in full power. |

Sounds legit.
There is just a huge wifi network setup across 100% of the country and all our cars are secretly linked into it. It sucks for those guys that live out in the sticks without broadband, it would be really nice for them if .gov would let them hook up to it as well. |

I haven't ever found any place that OnStar doesn't work. |

It's been done before:

Not much risk to me there.
Although both of my cars contain a computer for the motor, the throttle, brakes, and transmission in both are purely mechanical and human operated. No one is going to remotely take control of those. My 300ZX does have a computer to control steering, but only for the rear wheels, and they can only turn 1 or 2 degrees each way, so even if someone did try to take over that part I'm pretty sure that the (power assisted but manually controlled) front steering could compensate with a little finesse. My other car has more traditional steering, which obviously can't be hacked. |

The braking system on virtually every car in the world (including the high power monsters like the Bugatti Veyron) has more than enough power to bring the car to a stop, even under full throttle. The only way you'd be unable to stop is if your car had a maintenance issue, or the driver doesn't push hard enough. If you don't brake hard enough when the engine is fighting you like that, then you can overheat the brakes, causing them to fail. The correct solution is to apply full braking power so that the car can come to a stop before the brakes overheat. |

My car has no key. This is perhaps not feasible on your ratty old Ford, but there will come a day when the OPs tinfoil will be useful.
I think my car has 35 computers in it in various modules, all on a common communication bus. If the hackers can make Iranian centrifuges go boom, then your car is at risk. My car has upgradable firmware for engine mgmt and trans. Why would someone want to do this? Maybe you were a reporter writing highly revealing stories about the chosen One?
I would have made this a link, but the site no longer works properly on iPad because of the javascript tracking system. http://news.yahoo.com/blogs/lookout/hastings-crash-witness-113514329.html |
