CAT5 has 8 non-stranded wires in it. But 99% of people are only using four of those wires - it's designed to handle two channels.
If the cable still works leave it alone (pull out the staple though). I have a cable in a crawlspace that was installed by a crappy electrician. He must have kinked it or partially damaged it, because although it works I can only get 1Mb/s data through it. Better than nothing. . |

its a 150' cable ![]() 150'? That's nothing. You can get a box of 1000' for $80. That, a couple connectors and a cheap crimp tool and you're in business. Directions for wiring the connectors are available online. It really couldn't be much simpler. ETA: Here you go: http://www.computercablestore.com/cat5e-patch-cables1.aspx |

| I was going to say just leave the staple in if it was still working, sounds like you may have pulled it though. Yep most likely you were using only 1/2 of the wires so your chances were fair, but its definitely possible to make it worse by pulling the staple after puncture even if it didn't appear to mess it up first |
