Why would you only have 12 rds? It holds 20, put 20 in it.

I keep mine with round chambered, safety on, 30 rds of 75gr tap in the mag.  10" SBR with suppressor and Aimpoint always on. 100% cowitnessed BUIS with a tritium front post in case of optic failure.

Flip the switch, pull the trigger and she goes bang.

As above.

And why is the bolt locked back?  You want to jack a round and mimic a 12 gauge racking to scare away the bad guys?

Loaded 30 rd mag, un-chambered. Not exactly bedside, it stands in a corner. Bedside gun is a S&W 686. Other things in various places.

12 rounds? Bolt back? What's in the rest of your magazine? Not a dictionary, evidently.

That's just stupid.  The rifle is safer with a round in the chamber and the safety on.

Why do you keep the bolt back and only 12 rds?

I guess he relies on the bolt release?

Doesn't sound like a proper storage in any case.

12????????????
12/11/2012 9:23:57 PM EDT
[#14]
Huh?

Why the fuck do you only load 12? I can understand downloading it 2 rounds, but 8? Why?

Next, why bolt locked back? Why not just have a full mag, or even a mag downloaded 2 rounds, safety off, bolt forward. All you'll have
to do is pull the charging handle and you're ready to fire.

You got some 'splaining to do, Lucy!

Also, 30 round PMAG for the win. What's this 20 round shit? This ins't Vietnam!

a bit off topic but...if your aimpoint has a battery life of 8 years, what is the LED's life?

I think it is probably not much longer than the battery life...but I am guessing only.

Seriously, OP. Get yourself a 30rd pmag and load it to capacity. Chamber a round, and put the safety on. The noise of the bolt closing is unnecessary. If you deem it necessary to stay quiet, you will have a hard time doing so. Also, no one ever got in a gunfight and said, "gee, I wish I had less ammo."

WTF....what is your reasoning for only partially loading the magazine?  30 rd mag, 1 rd chambered, safety on.

LWRC (either 16 or sometimes 8.5), loaded and chambered with 30 rounds, safety on, suppressor mounted, hanging from bedpost.  Gets put away come morning.

I keep one of those 60 round quadstack mags, on the nightstand but only loaded with 44 rounds cuz its 87 - 1 divided by two plus 1.  Then I drop the bolt dry and put it on safe.   Then I compulsively check my red dot for good bright light indicating fully charged battery, probably like 7-12 times.  then I make sure it cowitnesses with my buis.  Then I flip my rear buis down.  But not the front.

Flip the switch and you're ready to go

I was going to reply but I was starting to think the same thing.

FWIW, my bedside AR has a full 30 rounds, chambered safety on with optic, light and sling. Only reason I download my other mags is to help them seat better, usually 28 per mag.

My AR is stored with a 30 round fully loaded mag, chamber empty, bolt forward, safety off.

All that's required to rock and roll is a simple pull of the charging handle.

I have an M2 so I swap the battery once a year whether she needs it or not. (or if I notice she's starting to dim)  If it lasts 8 years then its served its purpose and I'll buy another.  If it does happen to die, she's still got irons.

FWIW: I also have a surefire mounted.

ok, i think i have a consensus, i was thinking of doing what fly did with one less step , and 12 rounds should be enough unless you are asking for bad things by being a ass hole .. and i thought  more than 12 rounds would fubar the mag spring for long term storage  . good conversation guys  and calling someone a troll .should be saved for  people who aren't asking legit questions . some folks would be intimidated and not ask for options, but i am 60 yr old, and don't give a fuck  what some basement dweller says .loco

Loading a mag to full capacity has zero effect on the spring. Leave it loaded for a thousand years.

Funny, the springs in the magazines for my Sterling L2A3 are quite old and still seem to be working fine. Since I don't have an AR, that's become my bedside carbine...

They weaken from compression/decompression. Not from merely being compressed. Not my opinion.

Springs weaken from being cycled, not from being held at there compressed state.

So I'm not constantly chambering the same round over and over when I take this sucker out to the range then bring it back home and reload it with my SHTF ammo.

You should try a 10 round Mag, but only put seven rounds in it. Then you can put your other 5 rounds in another 10 round Mag, and have a reload, in case your first Mag fails, or you shoot up your seven rounds. This might sound silly to some people, but I know it makes perfect sense to you, OP.
12/11/2012 10:50:02 PM EDT
[#45]
The OP is way over thinking this.

Just load the damn mag up to max, chamber it, fire a round off and place it back beside you bed safety off.

This way if you ever have to use it you are already one step ahead of the game!!!
12/11/2012 10:52:22 PM EDT
[#46]
If you knock it over, that bolt is gonna come slamming into battery and chamber a round on an unsafe-tied rifle. Not like it's going to go off or anything, but I still wouldn't be comfortable with that happening if I'm not holding it.

I USED to keep my bedside AR Con-1, but I have two young boys--one of whom has autism. Now I keep it Con-3.

It isn't optimal for HD, but it's better than a dead kid.
