I'm not a watch snob by any means but I can't stand most quartz watches. I really like automatics, just can't afford the "good ones". What are some recommendations for a good auto? |
|
Some folks hold the "Seiko 7" range in high regard as durable, accurate automatic watches at a decent price point.
Not collector items generally, but solid. If you want 1/2 second per week accuracy then the Casio G-shocks are a better bet though they are quartz and not mechanical. I have a Seiko, FWIW. |
| Seiko makes great watches, all the way from very cheap to very expensive with great craftsmanship. As a watch snob, I have no reservations in recommending the brand. Google "Seiko Sumo", I have one and really like it a lot, great quality and always keeps great time. |

Lum-Tec has some automatics and is an American company They make great watches but my auto was somewhere around $1000 if I recall? They use Seiko movements I am led to believe. Rolex make junky shit IMHO, they dont keep good time and need constant attention, there are a lot better out there for the money. In the 60's there wasn't, which is why they got the reputation they now enjoy, but nowadays, with the Germans even turning out amazing timepieces, I wouldn't waste money on a Rolex. Lum-Tec are amazing, but they are not flashy. If you can cope with not flashy and don't want to spend Lum-Tec money, then the Vostok linked earlier are great performance per $. |

Sector, Hamilton, Tissot, Seiko, Swiss Army are all within your price range and you won't be disappointed with them. Here's a Fortis: http://forums.timezone.com/index.php?t=tree&goto=6178257&rid=0 Seiko Diver for $105.00: http://forums.timezone.com/index.php?t=tree&goto=6177910&rid=0 ETA: The Seiko is gone... |

Rolex make junky shit IMHO, . No they don't. But since no other watch company has the brand recognition Rolex does, hating on them is the "in" thing to do. Those in the know would respectfully disagree. Some of their pieces are excellent, but the lemon rate is above average... |

My wife has 2 and I just sold my Datejust. All of them were excellent timepieces. People that say Rolex is junk don't really know what they are talking about. I currently own 2 Tutimas, Tissot, Sinn, Krieger, Zodiac Super Seawolf, and some Seikos and a Citizen. Not a great stable, but I've sold a bunch. I'm looking to get another Rolex in the near future. |
| Like I said, some are good, some are lemons. Lemon rate higher than others in that price point. As a guy that was responsible for their service and repair for 3 years in Chicago at Madison and Wabash in jeweler's row I unfortunately have to respectfully disagree. Would I own one, yes, but I'd make damn sure it had a great pedigree. Would I look for another name first, yes. Each to his own, some have had fantastic runs with Rolex. Orthopedic surgery is forgiving, precision timepiece manufacture is not.. |

I know a few jewelers myself who were seeing quite a few big name watches coming back in in a higher frequency than Rolex. |

Rolex GMT Master, 30 years now. Bill Yeah, I've got a GMT Master II from '86 and it's fine, if not a bit weathered. For more inexpensive automatics, look to the Seikos and their 7S36B movement. OrientalWatches is another brand from Japan that has been making quality, inexpensive automaticmovements since 1908, Chris |

Vostok 1967 (or a regular Vostok Amphiban, or perhaps the "Scuba" model) http://i1189.photobucket.com/albums/z432/chistopolcity/New_seria_Amfibia_Komandirskie/DSC03411.jpg Funny thing is most of 'em use the same movement as the $75 Amphibia. I expounded at great length about their strengths and weaknesses recently. Neat watch if you're ok with it's quirks. The "safe" answer, and the most bang for the buck, the veritable Honda of auto watches, would be Seiko though. They make a good watch. They make a better watch than Vostok in fact, and I'm wearing a Vostok now. If you want swiss, I would guess you could find a Tissot in that price range, or some swiss army thing. |

Look for a hard-to-find Seiko. http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y91/Eyesofsilver/Knives/IMG_5529.jpg Nice. |

Can anyone recommend a good titanium watch for under $250? Thanks Check out http://chronograph.com/store/index.asp - view watches by "Seiko" and "Titanium". They have a number that are under $200. I've ordered from there before and had great service. My stainless Seiko watch band shipped from Singapore. |

) Seiko 5 Sports pop up on Chronoshark every so often in the $100ish range.
