Had an L5:S1 microdiscectomy about three years ago.  I call the procedure a success, it largely relieved the lower back pain and sciatica running through left buttock down to foot.  In the past few months I have started getting episodes of lumbar and radiating left leg pain again, but the back pain is more stabby than throbbing like last time and the leg pain feels like it is in the front of the left thigh mostly above the knee.  My PCP has written a referral for evaluation by an orthopedic surgeon.

Two questions:

I know info is limited, but if you were to hazard a guess based on symptoms and history, what does the new lumbar problem sound like it might be?

My last surgery was performed by a neurosurgeon.  Referral is for a new orthopedic surgeon.  Would you got back to the neurosurgeon for the evaluation or the orthopedic Doc?

Thanks.

Bump so some docs might see.  Also, it's all a heck of a lot worse first thing in the morning.
