what does suomi mean?

i thought it was a name of a gun, then i see the finnish hockey team with it scrawled on their jersey.

Yes, Suomi is finnish for Finland, with the S capitalized.

You are also correct in that it is a name of a weapon, the M31 Suomi submachinegun.
