Help me please.. I am Lt. Marc Weinstein FDNY/EMSC. Injured first day by the fall of a tower. I was not in the hospital the first week for 24 hrs. It is messing everything up for help with the Red Cross and other Charities. I have had 2 Operations Cervical Neck Fusion and Plates and Lumbar Fusion and plates. I lost hearing in left ear. Waiting for Comp to decide if they will OK a hearing aid. I am unable to work my Job. Was told by My doctors I am totally Disabled. I have been told by the FDNY Doctors same thing. Trouble is they tried to make me go back to work against 4 doctors orders. I cannot do anything, I am in constant pain. Some days I have to walk with a cane or Crutches. They have tried to make me return to light duty or it will be for 5 months and then I am terminated anyway. They are doing this so I will not get a full 3/4 Disability from the City of NY. If I do not return to work before 09/1102 I will be Terminated. I will not be allowed to use my Sick time or A/L time. I need help..My money is running out, my children start school tomorrow. I am going to be losing $1600.00/month. I am loosing my Overtime and Shift diff already. It seams no one will help because I was not in the Hospital for the first 24 hours that first week. I was at home waiting for authorization for MRI and Surgeries. This is how they are treating me. The red cross did give me a $40.000 gift. But they keep sending me papers and filling them out. I am then told I do not meet requirements because I was not in the hospital the 1st 24 hrs. I didn't stay because I needed to get back in and try to save my friends. The reality is I am going broke in pain might lose my house, Had to hire a Lawyer for Litigation on my 3/4 pension. Where are all these good people who are helping. DO I HAVE TO BE DEAD. If I was dead would my family be taken care of. My own Union does not even call or help. Why can't I get money I need finical help real fast. The Federal Fund They can't tell me how much I will get because I am still alive and they didn't make adjustments for injured workers.. I am at my last straw I feel like no one gives a crap. This rule and that rule. I am Injured never to return to my job again. And I get repaid by going to be terminated around 9/11/02....Does anyone see the irony in that. LT. Things are getting worse than I thought. I figured I would be ok until after Christmas. I do not WANT ANY MONEY from you. I just need your support in letter's and getting in touch with whoever you know. These Charities are pulling a fast one..Mitchell Plan. States had to be in the Hospital 24 hrs first day or week. This is almost an impossability for Emergency Workers and lots of people. We didn't get Authorization until a week or 2 later for MRI's or OPERATIONS. I meet all other rules. Totally Disabled, Disfiguration, Hearing loss. They don't want to help because of the 24 hr rule. This is a ploy to save money....Newspapers will be finding about this also soon. I can't even get help through the charities set up to help....I should have been killed at least my kids and wife would be taken care of.... |

Marc, I can't believe what I just read. After the sacrifices you and your brothers made, and this is what they hand you? I don't know what to say. I'm truly pissed. [:(!] I'll do what I can as far as emails and phone calls go. Have you considered trying to get Bill O'Reilly to hear this? I seem to remember that he was the original pit bull on the leg of the Red Cross and United Way shortly after 9/11. Maybe he'd like to help out with this. Regarding the last sentence of your post.... I really hope you don't feel that way. Hard times come and go, but life is a one-shot deal. And you've got a lot of friends right here on this board to help you through the hard times. None of us are further than a phone call/email/IM away. My prayers are with you and your brothers. |

Holy Pete! I missed that last line! Marc, get those thoughts out of your head NOW! I don't know if your Father is still alive or not. My dad left us 6 years ago, I miss him so much, there is nothing I wouldn't suffer to have my Dad around again. I'm sure your Wife and kids would feel the sameway. Money never can and never will take the place of someone you love. |

Perhaps it will get their attention if a group of us from work rattle their cages and threaten to redistribute our contributions and funds towards more "worthy causes". ... Marc, i am just as fucked up as you are, only it was two auto accidents, not the spectacular events of 9/11. I too was just doing my job. Now it is 4 yrs later, we may lose our paid for house to the tax collector b/c the insurance companies are in a Mexican Standoff. Go thru what you are going thru now for FOUR FUCKING YEARS and tell me about it. You are a hero in every sense of the word, and the publicity will get you some help. i am not, and I will very likely get fucked out of everything. If you decide its payback time, let me know, I have a few scores to settle too. Hell is certainly little worse than this, and if we have to live in hell, we may as well drag the assholes who are causing the problems with us... |

The Red Cross initially awarded him a $40,000 gift, but they kept delaying it with bureaucracy by sending duplicate forms and papers ultimately to be told he doesn't meet their since he was not in the hospital the first 24 hrs. The charities are pulling what appears to be a fast one with the so called Mitchell Plan which states those injured had to be admitted to the hospital for 24 hrs first day or week. This is an almost impossibility for many emergency workers and Lt. Weinstein didn't even get authorization until over a week later for MRI's or operations. Aside from this little catch clause, he meets all of the other requirements. At this point he is totally disabled, disfigured, and partially deaf from serving on the front lines. Yet, they don't want to help because of the 24 hr rule. Of course, if he had been killed, his family would already be taken care of. This is sort of ironic as we quickly approach the one-year anniversary with speeches and canonization of the so-called heroes. If they are heroes, then why aren't they being treated as such? The reality is he is going broke while suffering in pain. He faces foreclosure and might lose his house. He had to hire an attorney to litigate for his pension. Marc..I sent e-mails with Bendovers letter pasted in them to our local TV station which is an affiliate of a national TV station. I also sent it to our biggest daily news paper which is connected with the Canadian press. I don't know if it will help but I strongly encouraged them to contact you and hear your story. She assured me that she would try to get Mr. Ashcroft to give this some attention. No timeframe commitment as his schedule is obviously packed. Second hit. Marc, Time to get media attention, I'm contacting News 12 and NY One. Marc, I know you spend time on Glock Talk and other gun boards, can we post your info there too? We really need to get the word out! For those of you that do not know him, Marc is the real deal and is getting shafted in a big way. Have we forgotten already the sacrifices our Emergency Service personnel have made? Marc; As I said in my email to you the other day...this sucks the big one!!! However...I think you are about to see just how much HELL can get raised by a bunch of really great guys who realize one of their own is getting royally FUCKED! Emails sent, phone calls still being made. It is enough that good men and women put their lives at risk every day to help others often not fit to shine their shoes. They should not have to put their possessions and their families there, too. (Although, God knows they are to some degree anyway) The sanctimonious bastards responsible for this crap need to be coming to Marc with their hats in hand asking just what they can do FOR him to get the heat turned off! | Marc, this is a terrible thing to happen to you, I am outraged by the shear lack of compassion by these organizations who proclaim to be in the 'People Helping Business.' You are a very nice guy and a Hero in every sense of the word. You deserve much better and I will ensure you that I will continue to call, write, and email every foundation, on that list, and then some, until you get some satisfaction. Right now I am at work, but when I get home the edpmedic campaign will begin with a fury. Hang tight my brother, help is on the way. THANK YOU ALL...I just need to make one correction...The first money I did get was from the Red Cross about a year ago. There was NO hold up in it. They came to my house and really did help. It is the secondary fund and supplemental funds which are being a problem. I am told constantly you should get it. Then they keep throwing that 24 hour monkey wrench into it. I am just getting tired of filling these forms out being told certain things and turned down. I just want it understood that RED CROSS was there when this first happened. They were very good to me. I can't understand who made this Mitchell rule and why they do not take into consideration the other things has much. This goes for all these charities |

Well, I happen to have a copy of tape from 1 of the 2 networks that were present... and I think it is the one that you spoke with! If I'm correct, then a followup story here in the midwest ([i]with original footage as a lead off[/i]), shouldn't take any time to hit the wires. If there is one thing that I do have, it's media contacts, and we scartch each others backs!
