There are a couple academic journal articles that I have come across depicting the Park Rangers in the Africa as running basically an anti-insurgency campaign. Poaching is a nasty business in Africa. My dad hunted Zimbabwe in 05 and said the Rangers out there are very shoot first ask questions later. |

Being a park ranger in Zimbabwe is on my short list of worst jobs in the world. |

Why do we need elephants? What purpose do they have? If they were all gone tomorrow, how would the world change? How do ecosystems work for $1000 Alex? For one elephants have the ability to smell water. They often dig to get to the water allowing other animals to benefit from their finds. |

So they help the FSA animals to survive. So if they were gone, other animals will die or they will learn to find water on their own. |

| This is the strongest argument for hunting safaris, since the money all those great white hunters poor into the economy goes to pay for territory and wildlife protection. I have an idiot liberal neighbor who hates hunting and I tried to explain that without economic incentive to save the elephants Africa would let them be wiped out by poachers. National geographic also did a story saying the same thing. |

IIRC, South Africa is the only country in sub-sahara that does not have a kill-on-sight policy for poachers. Quoted:

There will be a commemorative plaque engraved in your honor, and we'll assign someone to read it to you should you ever make it down here. |

Those motherfuckers should have their extremities removed with tin snips.
There are 7 billion people on this planet and counting. There are a couple thousand elephants. YES I value the lives of elephants over poaching shitbags who probably aren't saints during their off hours anyway. If it were up to me I'd send a few ODAs down there weapons free. |

This is one of those times when "If you gotta ask, then you'll just never understand" applies. |

The truth is one could ask the same about humans in general. Seriously....how can you answer that with a serious face. Aside from making the world easier for other humans to live in.....what purpose do humans serve? Many would argue that if we were all gone tomorrow the world would be better off. Is that the litmus test for allowing things to live on this planet with us....what purpose do they serve? Fuck it....lets kill everything. |

I'm not saying I am for poaching or thetermination of species. I am asking what purpose the have. Same thing I ask the hippies when they bring up whales. No one answered me. They make jokes and put me down but can't answer a simple question. Or they say some bullshit like they are majestic creatures. so go on with your defense of the majestic creatures. |

Why do we need elephants? What purpose do they have? If they were all gone tomorrow, how would the world change? I'm trying to figure out if this is grade-A trollage or not. If not, well, I often wondered what was going through the minds of the people who wiped out the passenger pigeon and destroyed the vast herds of buffalo that used to cover the Midwest for no good reason, and now I guess I know... |
