Considering going to Hughes Net for internet service. Anybody have any info on whether this is a good way to go or are they someone to avoid?
I'd appreciate any input on this.

Hughes Net has major suckage in the FAP department. Their customer service sucks aids infected donkey dicks.

I still can't get a straight answer on what my download limit is under the FAP, orginally or should I say that I found out the hard way that 250Megs a 24 hour period is the MAX, then they pork you with a 24 hour period of less than 24k, according to my stats it was more like 7k. If I could speak to someone in India who knows what level my plan is I might have a better idea. My problem is I don't like to talk to India, especially after the first time it took me 8 phones calls and an 1 hour and 45 minutes on hold to get another situation resolved.

Last time I talked to someone i was told the FAP had been changed to 350Megs a 24 hour period. I think that is not quite correct.

Part of the suckage is you have to go thru some other provider or at least I did to get set up on Hughes, I fucking paid thru the nose for installation about 2 years ago. Also your installation cost only covers an installation that is X number of feet from your residence, farther than X you have to pay the installer Y amount of $$$$ for every foot.

Try Blue Sky or whatever their name is, they are running a special on installations till the end of the year. Some of my neighbors hooked-up with them and are very happy, I am seriously considering a switch.

I have Wild Blue, and it's decent as far as satellite goes. I can't remember what my FAP limit is, but I've never hit it. Wild Blue is a part of Dish network, and they have a tool you can login to check your current FAP usage and monitor.

Overall, I hate any satellite and if I could get cable/DSL I would in a split second, but I'm stuck. I currently pay seventy dollars a month for a service that goes out in a mid-heavy rain or wind, versus forty dollars a month for cable that is faster and doesn't have the problems that satellite does with the weather, ping, etc. If you are into playing online games, completely forget about it with satellite.

Thanks for the info, that's exactly what I was looking for. Those seem to be my choices, Hughes or Blue as I'm 20 miles from town and on dial up now.

I thought Hughenet was Pakistani? Go figure.
If they can speak understandable english they usually don't know what they're doing. Call to pay a bill, you get tech support. They want to play 20 questions to document their handling a call before transferring you. when they do transfer you you get to play 20 questions again. I hate dealing with them.
I took an 8 hour class to be considered an installer. I usually travel for work with a 5th wheel trailer so I thought this would be a good way to have internet anywhere. Usually it works good. When it doesn't it's a real pain.
Lately what I'm getting when I do need to call installer tech support (starting with Indians) is that you can't work on your own equipment. Wait a minute, assholes, I'm an installer.........
The bandwidth limit I believe is 240mb over 4 hours. And yes, the spicket gets turned almost off if you go over, for 24 hours. No video downloads. Only way I was able to get over that was to Google download in chunks. Stop download under 240mb and then 4 hours later download another 200mb.
The computer remembers the earlier downloads and picks up where it left off. Pain in the ass.
Hughesnet has way over sold the capacity of the satellites.
During peak hours my download speeds can drop to 35mb.
I never see continuous over about 130mb even though I'm paying for 250mb/second.
During peak times it's almost as slow as dialup.

I have had both.  I am currently with Hughes.  This is what I know from personal experience.

Hughesnet is better if all you do is surf and e-mail with an occasional download.  I have an upgrade package, and I will hit my 350Meg FAP every couple of weeks.  It does suck.

Wildblue is great if you are hardcore downloader.  iTunes and Newsgroups, Torrents, etc.  They work their FAP over 30 days, not 24 hours.  Last time I used WB, it was 17GIG in 30 days, and they will e-mail you if you get close to the threshold.  Surfing, it seems the WildBlue latency is a little slower, but if you want to download a lot of stuff, it is the way to go.

Neither one will even compare to the most basic DSL service, so don't even think about it.  Even though it is advertised as 1.5Mbs, it doesn't ever feel like it.

My Hughes contract is up in February, and I am thinking about going back to WildBlue so I can go back to downloading TV shows and such.

Thanks for the review of both, now I know what I want, just not sure if I can afford the shift.
