Explosives Found in Home of High School Student

NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (AP) _ A New Bedford High School senior pleaded innocent Wednesday to possessing a cache of explosives and weapons in his home.

Donald Laberge, 18, was charged with unlawful possession of explosives. After an arraignment in New Bedford District Court, he was ordered held on $2,500 bail.

Lt. Richard Spirlet, a spokesman for New Bedford police, said investigators found 12 rounds of 50-caliber ammunition, unassembled grenades, a film canister filled with magnesium and black powder, and three round tubes tied together with wires that was attached to a timer.

Laberge was originally arrested March 30 on charges of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and unlawful possession of a dangerous weapon. He was alleged to have threatened another student with a double-edged, spring-loaded knife.

He pleaded innocent to the charge and was released.

According to Bristol Assistant District Attorney Gerald FitzGerald, Laberge was suspended from school Tuesday.

Spirlet said a family member informed police Tuesday the items had been found in Laberge's room. Police investigated and obtained an arrest warrant.

Should he have been arrested? Let's see; assault and battery with a deadly weapon, stuff to build an explosive device with. Yep, I'd have locked his dumb *ss up, and bail would have been WAY up there!
