Anyone hear/read/see anything about this?
Nothing in the news that I know of but someone from another forum said it happened.
Is this a dupe?

That whole thing pisses me off. Yeah, it could shoot down an airplane, oh wait IT'S FLYING AT 25, 000 FUCKING FEET! If you can hit an airplane with a single projectile fired from a rifle that heavy, you are a stud. Dumb fucking liberals.

For that matter, even of you DID hit it, you'd have to get extreemely lucky to hit anythuing vital enough to bring it down.

To my knowledge only one aircraft has been aledgitaly shot down by a single shot .50 BMG.
The shot was made by a military sniper and during a war. Many other snipers were attempting to do the same but all failed but one was aledgately reported to have succeded in the attempt.

Not to mention that in order to shot down an aircraft you would have to hit a vital area that woud cause an imeadiate catastrophic failure or extensive damage While it's moving. The odds of that happening are so slim they are almost off the scale. Let alone the report would be loud enough to alert every cop within a virtual mile.

I've gotta believe that we'd have heard if there was a .50 BMG drive by. (But if there was, it would be ironic - the only .50 BMG drive by in history happens in the only state in which they're banned).

For what it's worth....

I was watching the history channel a month or so back, an historian was talking about the development of the radar proximity fused anti aircraft cannon. He said that before the proximity fusing was used in the Pacific theatre, it took on average, 2600 rounds of anti aircraft cannon fire to down a single Zero. After the radar fusing was made standard, the average dropped to only 600 rounds.

The Zero was a very lightly built, fragile airplane.

These sailors got lots of practice and were very motivated.
