What does it take to buy a 50?  Are there special hoops to jump through and do I need to leave my name and fingerprints with the BATF for future confiscation.

A whole bunch of money.

Check your state laws for restrictions.  I don't know of any states that have any.

.50 caliber is a "long gun" just like a .22LR.  Same procedure; same 4473; same NICS.  Bunch more money as KK points out.  Oh yeah, ammo is 2 bucks a shot these days.

No you can find some ammo that is about a dollar a round. Look in Shotgun News there's a lot of nice deals listed.

True, but that ammo won't be reloadable, and at the prices .50BMG costs, you need to reload (unless Bill Gates is in your extended family...).
