Plus, as wheelguns go, it's pretty heavy.  I have a two inch SP101, and don't even carry it as a backup gun.

Between the two of go 357.
You couldn't pay me to carry a glock

Really, consider the SIG 229/226

I own both and have carried both (well.........not a 19 but I carry a 17 and own and once in awhile carry a 26). So I guess that tells you my answer.

The SP101 is very heavy. The SP101 is easier to carry in a pocket holster which is a nice option. The SP101 in .357 is a potent cartridge. Trying to carry a reload for a revolver is a PITA, especially when the 19 will give you that many rounds in the gun without having to reload.

The Glock makes night sights a lot easier. The Glock has better sights. Obviously I like reloading with a magazine over loose rounds in the revolver.

FWIW: I own at least a half dozen 2" .38s/.357s including Ruger, S&W, and Colt. I don't carry any of them. But used to. They still work as well as they always did, but IMO they have been rendered obsolete by guns like the Glock 19. For the roughly the same size you get a lighter weight gun that has better sights and more magazine capacity.

Glock 19 is the best (compromise) carry gun I own.   It's big enough to shoot well but small enough to carry.  I like that it holds 15 rounds, and the reloads I carry are 17 rounds.   If I was going to go with a 357 instead of it, it'd be a lightweight snubby for the size/weight.

I am considering getting either a ruger sp101 in .357 magnum or a glock 19 in 9mm for CCW.

Vote for which I should get and comment on why.

Poll inbound.

My first CCW was an SP101. Heavy, 5 rounds, fat, obnoxious with .357 loads.

Have carried a G19 for years. No comparison. The Glock is by far the better choice.

I pocket carry the Sp101 damn near everywhere. I tried some different iwb holsters, fuck that shit. It's either owb or pocket carry.

I have shot it with the 158 Remington hunting loads, it pushes a bit but it's not that big a deal.

Running critical defense 357 and gold dot 38 short barrel. Can't find gold dot 357 short barrel right now.

I'm leaning towards the glock 19 due to the ammo capacity and accessory support.

Will let you guys know what choice I make.

G 19.

When your life is on the line, when has more ammo and faster reloading ever been a bad thing?

If you can conceal either of these guns, this is not even a question. G19 is the only answer here, and anyone that says anything else is completely out of it.

Do you 13ers get together and talk about being stupid as a unit? It's uncanny, and you really need to study guns before you give advice, because you sound absolutely retarded.

16 rounds vs. 5 rounds of similar stopping power. How can you be serious by recommending the latter?

QFT.

This ain't the 50's. We have much better choices than a clunky revolver that has a reload that is pretty bad for stressful situations. Unless you're Jerry Miculek or something.

wrong and 357 performs much better in vehicles through glass azd auto bodys but in a short short snub like the 101you loose alot of power

the revolver will be easier to conceal look at your needs and environment   then choose accordingly.

I prefer the SP101, you will not need multiple rounds after that first fireball comes out of the SP101 and scorches the earth in front of you there will be nothing left. Besides Glocks are just for posers who need attention.

Glock personally if for no other reason than I can shoot autos much more accurately and quickly than I can revolvers.  And for that reason I'd even prefer a single stack 6 shot auto to a 6 shot revolver.

I do still put my Ruger in a coat pocket during the winter. Easy and fast to get to without having to pull up my coat and shirt to get, like i would have to with the XD45 on my hip.

Heavyweight boxer Cleveland Williams took a .357 to the gut and continued to fight!

In 2003, he was ranked 49th in Ring Magazine's list of 100 greatest punchers of all time. It was all in the big famous left hook for Williams.

Upon reading the thread title AND the original post, I have to ask, why a .357 snubbie? Might as well just use .38 special +p.

The answer is the Glock 19.  I can't think of an objectively good answer to go with the revolver in your question.

I hate to say it but given a choice between any Ruger and a Glop 19 for defensive purposes, the Glop is the clear choice.

Using a revolver in this day and age is like racing Formula 1 with F100 pickup.
You can drive around the track like the newer cars but in the end you'll get blown away.

Glock 19, revolvers are strictly back ups unless it it bear or snake country, or you just need to grab a gun to stick in your pocket.

I've had both.  While both are quality pieces, they are both heavy for ccw IMO.  Of the two, I would go Glock.  The size\weight of the SP101 is just too much for the capacity for me.

Have both and very very much prefer the Glock 19.

I carry my G19 or G34 everyday.

Snubby .38 just sets in safe or maybe rides in the glovebox during road trips in case
my wife needs to grab it while we are stopped somewhere.

It's all about shot placement isn't it?

What are your personal odds of placing a stopping shot:
A) using a 5 shot mini-cannon with a long-ass DA trigger pull
B) on a moving target that is shooting at you with a hi capacity semiauto
C) while your adrenaline and heartrate are at eye-popping levels

If you are cool as a cucumber and have been tested under fire multiple times, 5 rounds between reloads (a.k.a. sitting duck intervals) might be enough. Nine times out of ten, in the world as it exists today, you can get into a fight with the 101, but you'll probably need the Glock to get out of it.

ETA: I assumed a lot.... mostly that your worst-case scenario is something more than some crazy derp with a baseball bat running up to you from far away.

Interesting. So what is you attack gonna be like? How many people will it involve? Just one? How many shots did Darren Wilson fire against one unarmed attacker again?

Im not trying to be a dick, honest. But you should seriously reconsider "5 rounds is good enough". Because most incidents show, it just isnt. Whether youre in Mayberry or not.

Stay safe
