Last Friday, we had an e-mail argument

Game over, you lost.

Next time, stay the bigger man and go over the idiot's head, if his e-mails get unprofessional - and not by e-mail.

whup his ass for him

I am a SSgt (E-5) in the Air Force, and my direct work supervisor is a civilian (I still have an AF supe for admin).

Previously, I worked for a super liberal(in her eyes, she's actually semi-moderate, but still left leaning) lady, but she was tolerable.

As of the last couple weeks I work for this guy that hasn't worked my mission in several years, and is a well rounded douche bag.  The only interaction I've had with him face to face was once, and that was forced upon him by my previous civilian supervisor. Oh, and I don't even work in the same building as him; it's across a highway (though I'll be working over there before Oct... ugh).

Last Friday, we had an e-mail argument over some work related stuff that ended in a derogatory, attacking, and condescending flame mail that I didn't have a chance to respond to before I left for the day (had to leave early to go to Commander's call to get presented the Achievement Medal I received from my last station).

This morning, I get to work, and within 30 minutes I receive another email from him saying I either have been trained wrong, don't care about the mission, or am an idiot.  I couldn't even find enough levelheadedness in my being to respond to the email without saying something that would come back to harm me.  He gave me until Wed to give him 3 weeks worth of work done "his" way.  He'll get it (because it's going to end up being shitty shortcut work, which is what he's accomplishing), along with notification that I'm applying to be a Tech. School instructor, failing that, I'll put in for Korea or a deployment.

Fuck this place, I hate it, and I hate working for civilians! (in a military setting)

Save those e-mails, they may come in handy down the line.

We call that "working in the private sector as a salaried employee..."

Previous boss never had this grievance, and has worked it for many years.  I have worked it nearly a year.

Yes, I have avenues to fix it, I was told that I have to attempt to work with this individual when the change over took affect though.  This was just a bit of a rant to let out some steam (I was planning on applying to be a tech school instructor anyways, and I'll have the time on station to apply in October)

The argument was not so much an argument, as me stating why I wasn't taking action on something(that I didn't view as actionable), and him telling me to because another entity did while belittling me at the same time.

In addition, I'm working on getting a SrA (E-4) and PFC (E-3) out of their office, which is situated next to mine, due to the fact that they've both been there for ages (one over a year and the other just under a year) still aren't trained, don't know what their mission is, what it is for, and just stare at a computer screen for 8 hours a day.

One of the biggest mistakes people make is thinking that because their old boss did it the new boss has to do it that way or wants to do it that way.

As an E5 your preferred and exceptional way of doing something is the way your boss wants you to do it . Not the old boss or you.

If you were told you were going to have to learn to work with him, it's apparent the powers that be know his work issues.  You will have to learn to work with him.  He's there for the long run and you will be rotating out.  I expect that any overt effort to torpedo him by poor work is going to bite you badly before him.

Assuming you have a mission worth doing, who will suffer from poor work product.  Some miscellaneous library thet nobody will ever look at?

Or the troops in the field?

Who should your loyalty be to?

+1

I suppose I hate being unemployed and hungry just a little more than working for a dirty civilian.
