First off I don't want this to be cop bashing thread. I want to know your toughts on the question. I personally do not think unmarked cars, painted up slick tops, SUV without light bars etc should be used for traffic enforcement for two reasons. 1. In my opinion it's easy enough to catch all the violators you can handle without an unmarked car. Using unmarked cars for undercover work is fine so that is not the issue. 2. Imposters using dash lights and some even using grill lights all the way up to strobing a car for the purpose of causing harm to others ie, women, robbing etc. This is my main reason. To this end I have instructed the females in my life to never pull over for an unmarked car. To instead call 911 on her cell phone and to proceed to the nearest well lit and populated area. How have you advised females concerning this subject? |
|
Not just the females, but no one should get out for an unmarked car. If a unmarked car "lites me up" I might pull over if I know its a cop in an unmarked. But if I am not sure I will keep driving. If I do pull over the windows stay up and I will ask for a patrol unit, regardless of weather the guy has a uniform or not. SGatr15 |

Advice I heard once: In the daytime, pull over. If he's in uniform, do the regular "good morning, officer" thing. If the guy getting out is in plain clothes, start driving away, and follow directions below. At night, especially in unlit areas - follow directions below. Pull to the (outside / shoulder) lane, and slow down.... to like 20 mph or so. Hit your 4-way flashers. If you have a cell phone, call 911, give your location, car desription, and license plate #, and ask if there's an umarked unit with your model car in front of it. As long as you're not speeding up, failing to acknowledge the presence of the officer, or othrwise trying to "flee" or "elude", even if the guy wants to be an ass and charges her, she should be able to get the charge thrown out - especially if she pulls over IMMEDIATELY when the marked unit shows up. |

Those are just plain scary! I have decided to call 911 on my cell phone from now on whenever I get stoped. IMO, most cop are ticking time bombs, and if it is a real cop and you don't stop, you are as good as dead. I had an altercation just recently with a cop in a SUV, all he had was grill lights, he went to spin a U turn (comeing at me), I got in his way (I coudn't even tell what he was trying to do), then he started yelling out his window at me like a maniac, I turned and looked at him, then I noticed the little lights in the grill. He didn't even have the siren on, but he thought EVERYONE just MAGICALY knew he was a cop! This was in Roseburg Oregon, I'm not from there, so I didn't know what there vehicles look like! After that I seriosly thought about writeing to some lawmakers to get a law on the books to make it illegal for cops to be unmarked and still have the authority to do traffik stops. I am afraid of cops, I have been one, and I KNOW what they are capable of, I've seen three serial rapist in two departments, my mom allmost got raped by one of them. If they can waste my time, I shall waste thiers, by dialing 911 every time! Lets start a letter writeing campain! |
|
| I have always told people that if they were in any doubt at all to drive to the nearest police station, then stop. Do not accellerate away, or try to take evasive action. A real cop will interpret this as fleeing but if you maintain speed and drive to the cop shop, your actions and fear are easily explained. |
|
1. Slowly check your rear-view mirror and create a mental picture of what the car looks like. 2. Proceed to a well-lit area with atleast a few individuals that can witness the event. 3 Stop your car and keep the windows up and all the doors locked. 4 Once you have completed said steps, THROW YOUR HANDS IN THE AIR LIKE YOU JUST DON'T CARE! |
First off most cops are good cops. There are bad ones. Not a cop bashing thread. If you are afraid of cops seak counseling. Write your letter a very good idea. ETA: There is a differecence between needing more training concerning all the areas they have to deal with than being corrupt or power tripping, |
![]() You have never been a LEO. Get someone to vouch for you or otherwise prove it. |
| There was a guy not to long ago in the Corpus Christi area pulling people over in an unmarked car. I think the cops put it on the news not to stop but go to a populated area and call for the cops. They never caught him as far as I know. Definately do not stop without other people around, not that they would help in some cases. |
Not all Wa. staters have WSP in their plates. It used to be that way. |

A girlfriend I had in High School was on her way to my parent's home when a car with a dash light tried to get her to stop. She slowed and drove about 1 mile to my parents house with him following. Upon turning into our yard the dude saw my dad and I and fing FLOORED IT and hauled ass. We called the city kitties and they documented it. A string of attacks followed in our area for about 3 weeks until a female LEO got "pulled over" by the guy and apprehended him. This was in like 1985 or somesuch. I drive an unmarked Explorer. Blue strobes front and rear, corner strobes, wigwags and audible, of course. If a person slowed and indicated that they just desired to move to a well lit or populated place I am good with it. Believe it or not this has only happened a VERY few times in my career. People just stop... I am about to get a Durango so that certainly is not gonna look like the po po. One thing is the audible. If I saw strobes AND heard a siren I would likely figure it was good to go. |
|
Yes, just like burglary, assault and rape. They never happen either. ![]() Truth be told, there are over 15 agencies in my metro area and it would'nt be to hard for someone to fake their way into a t-stop. In fact, I have seen the Mexicans paint up a Chevy truck, put reflective green stripes on it, put US .ogv plates on it and a light bar, fill it with Tonks and drive them into the country. Luckily, a real agent saw is and wanted to meet with the other "agent" in it, so they took off. The vehilce was an exact match of the BP truck. |

Slick tops and other cars that are marked on the side are used for specific reasons. For one, it's a lot harder to "pace" clock someone in a fully marked car with a light bar. Second slick tops can maneuver in traffic to catch people who are weaving in and out of traffic like morons. Again, the light bar approaching in the rearview is a giveaway that the police are behind you. Usually unmarked traffic cars still look like police cars, especially if they are Crown Victoria's. They will have push bumpers, the spot light on the driver’s side; you might see the cage inside the car etc. There are "ghost cars" or cars that resemble regular cars, but they are usually something like a Mustang, or a Camero, sometimes the police will use confiscated cars. I know the Florida Highway Patrol had a fully marked 280ZX at one time. NYPD has taxicabs that are actually police cars, but you wouldn't know it until they light up with lights and sirens. Next, the light package is another way to tell. Most real police cars will light up like a Christmas tree. Wig wag head lights, strobes in the turn signals, dash strobes with the tear drop dash light, rear deck strobes, grill lights and a very loud siren. Most folks impersonating a cop are not going to have over a thousand bucks worth of lights and siren in the car. They are probably only going to have a teardrop style light and it might not be the right color (red in southern states usually means fire dept. Blue in northern states might mean volunteer fireman). Many agencies don't want detective working traffic. If a detective is making a stop, he will probably ask for a marked car to come by if he has his wits about him. Also (at least when I was a detective) we didn't have sirens in our cars, we also drove cars like Taraus's, Lumina's and other rental looking cars. I tried to avoid traffic enforcement, but if the situation came up that I had to stop someone, the first thing I did was ask for a marked car to make the stop for me if I could. The uniform is another clue. Have you ever actually worn a police uniform? They are uncomfortable; you are carrying 20-25 pounds of extra stuff with you, body armor, radio, sidearm etc all factor in. If the guy is real, that stuff look different from the guy wearing a modified security guard shirt and pants that is ill fitted, wrinkled and disheveled. Having said that, there is nothing wrong with stopping in a very public place if you are unsure if the person stopping you is a real LEO. Go to a 7-11 or other 24-hour type store if it is at night. Like others have said, don't try to lose the car, this might be misunderstood as fleeing. Get on the cell phone and call the police, they will know if they have a car making a traffic stop. Acknowledge they are behind you, wave, and point in an attempt to tell them you are going to stop someplace you feel safe in doing so. Like if you are in the interstate, get off at the next exit and stop at a gas station with lots of witnesses. Edited for spelling. |
Although I donot remember the source but I have heard/read the same for some LAPD cases. Actually building a whole cruiser from auction vehicles. |
When you're on a highway, do you actually KNOW where there is a police station? For the metro-Los Angeles area, there are only a few LAPD stations. Your chances of finding a police station while being persued by a car is pretty remote. I have seen LAPD has "plain-wrapped" patrol cars that look exactly like a civilian vehicle down to the license plate except that there are 2 uniformed LAPD officers. |
Someone on here probably knows me, but I don't think they could say anything good about me. And how could someone vouch for me while keeping my identity secret?
|
See my post above? This is what I am talking about, cops that are "loose canons"! |
Ok Poser. I try to keep my agency off the board so I can speak my mind and all but there are several, Hell, almost many, folks here who can validate my creds. You? + No. = Poser.
|
i found some good ammo at ombps and bought it. its a police supply store in the net. I now get so many police catalogs wanting to sell me lights, sirens and everything else, from badges to uniforms, tape, guns, etc. All from police supply shops. It would not be hard to get a white caprice..... TXL |
So what am I going to do? Call out people by name? Personaly, I don't want them to know who I am! I left the DOT in '98, I worked for DOI in '03. So what's your problem? Are ya nuts?
|
Yep, we have front plates. I cant see it for the headlights though. |
No but if you ever were a LEO I am glad it is past tense cause, you, my friend have a screw loose (see the red above , for starters). Plus, I bet your reports were... interesting...

Five-o will know if you are a poser or not Jimmy_Hoffa. I am sure thru IM there are ways he can verify your status and kept it 100% confidential. I for one can vouche for Five-o, but can't say the same about you. And so far from waht I have seen I am tending to agree with Five-o's claims until you prove otherwise to him. Sgatr15 |
| I had a guy in a ford f150 flashing his lights at me, trying to get my wife and I to pull over about two weeks ago. He pulled up along side and flashed a badge at me but when I drove to a well lit convenience store, he took off. I got behind him without me knowing and followed him for about ten minutes into a residential area where he stopped and went into a house so I drove by and called the police. When they arrived, I pointed out the house and they arrested the guy. Turns out he worked for a security company. Got fired the previous week. |
What a fucking loser. |
Good for you! We have had instances of security guards and corrections officers and yes, even a couple of off duty or former LEOs doing that same BS. It is stoooopid! The only time I ever did anything even close was to follow a bad, bad drunk on the interstate trying to keep folks out of his way while waiting for a trooper to catch up to us. He finally got high centered over a rail and I put the Habeus Grab Ass on him as he was stumbling away (into traffic). Don't ask about non traffic off duty stuff. I tend to be... zealous, at times. Not stupid, mind you but just... zealous! ![]() BTW, thanks SGTAR, I'm not gonna call you crazy for a couple of weeks! |
You have way too many emotional issues to ever be a LEO. Maybe you dressed up as one on Halloween... As for the original question, my squad has a few unmarked. Just drive nice and slow, drive to a well lit, well populated area, maybe roll the window down and signal to the officer that you see him and are stopping, and you can roll it back up. Once the UNIFORMED officer greets you, politely ask to see his commision card, which will identify him as a police officer. Ask him politely that you would like a marked unit to roll up on your stop. Just let him/her know that you are cooperative. That should allay any fears you have, and also not ass up the officer. Most Officers issued unmarked should know what to expect. If not, then you can call and complain. Im sure most Sgts would agree with you. But again, that is just my dept. |
I'll tell you a story, later. I will think about how much I want to say while I go out for a smoke. |
| In Tempe, AZ a couple weeks ago a lady had 2 cops come to her door, full uniforms, and I think they even had a car. They showed her a signed search warrant with a "city of Tempe" stamp on it, so she let them in. They went around searching stuff in her house, then left. awhile after they left she got suspicious and called the police who told her they knew nothing about a search warrant being served on her house, they then went and check her house for stolen items, nothing was stolen. It's really weird, and I believe that nothing else has been discovered about the case. |
JH, Up until tonight, I didn't even know that you existed. However, in the last few minutes, I have had the opportunity to do a search and read many of your posts. It is so painfully obvious that you are FOS to the point where there isn't any redemption available. Do yourself a favor. Stop posting. Take your meds. Move onto another board. Quit talking shit. |
|
We have a guy in the area right now who has a warrant for impersonating a federal agent. This guy has done ALOT of shit. he even racked up $200,000.00 in helicopter fees after he told a helicopter company he was the director of FEMA and went back and forth to florida after the bad weather. this stuff is not even the tip of the ice burg, but never the less....these people are dangerous. |
|
They are. I worked a case where this guy was responding to classified ads for guns for sale. He would meet at the home or at a neutral location and talk himself up as a FAA Agent (???) and flash some creds. His truck even had FAA on the side. He would then get the seller to take a personal check which proved to be forgeries. In one case he took the weapon, walked to his truck and shagged ass. He was "buying" AWs and handguns like they were candy all ove South AL and the FL Panhandle. A FL Inv and I put two and two together and found the common threads and subsequently got a good lead on him and cranked up the heat. We found that he was a student pilot and a real nut job. He fled and was finally caught in CA. Never really knew or found out what his intentions were. Let me tell you, the FBI, FAA and ATF were VERY interested when we turned them onto this cat. I have NEVER seen them respond to anything so seriously. Playing as the Po Po is for real stupid and bad for everyone. |
