After the water starts boiling, how long do you boil the egg before it's done?

3 mins as per wifey.
Edit: That's for soft boiled. 5 mins for hard boiled. YMMV.

Turn on high, place egg in water, bring to boil. Once to boil, reduce to low, cook 5min for soft center, 7min for semi hard to hard, and 7plus for hard boiled. Putting egg into cold water as soon as cooking is done will aid in peeling.

3 min for soft (yolk will run but no white slime).  Might depend on whether egg is room temperature or right out of the fridge.  Maybe go 3.5 minutes for the latter.

I put two eggs in the pot with the cold water, put it on the burner, set the burner to high, and set the timer for twelve minutes. When the buzzer goes off I have two perfectly boiled eggs.

Poke hole in big end of egg with tack or needle. Put eggs in cold water, on the stove,  and bring to a boil. Immediately remove from heat and cover. Let sit 17 min. Works pretty good. I Googled it a long time ago.
