The AK47 is so basic no luxury at all and not that user friendly, the sights suck no hold open on the last shot, safety sucks. But thats what makes it good no frills just a rifle that will never give up no matter how hard its abused. So under 100yards its hard to beat. |

M16/M4 under most circustances. However, if I were going to go an extended patrol or longterm mission with few supplies I would probably prefer the AK. The 7.62x39 round will penetrate better also, if you are going into a forested area,etc. I'd take the M16 handsdown if I had to choose only one, now. |

In all seriousness, the M16/AR15 is much more user friendly. You can manipulate the controls far easier - hit the selector switch with right thumb, slap the left side of the rifle to release the bolt catch, big magazine well for mag changes. No need to 'rock' the magazine in, like on so many other designs. The sights are also much better, and IMO the .223 is a better round than the 7.62 x 39, although some will certainly debate that. |

It all depends on the size of the vehicle and what type of ground, soft ground either weapon would survive anything less than a tank. But hard ground would destroy either. My unit used our 7 ton trucks to destroy about a Battalions' worth of Iraq rifle, place all them on a hard ball road ran over them and they none of them would work afterwards. |

The M16 family of weapons still has to unfairly contend with the reliability issues it endured in its troubled birth; simply because an Army dimwit decided to switch the propellant type. After the propellant was switched back, along with the addition of chrome chamber & breech, the M16 proved to be perhaps the worlds' most reliable rifle; beating out the AK in many a test. In addition, it can actually hit targets out to 400 yards. |

True true true...7 tons is a lot of truck to say the least! But c'mon, we ALL know a little dust in an M16 can get you killed! An AK, you can throw mud in the receiver and that bitch will still bust a nut![wave] |

It doesn't matter which rifle is better, thougher or more reliable. What matters is that when it DOES go bang, you hit what you were aiming for. The sights on an AR15/M16/M4 will let you do this faster, and more accurately. Also, though there is much debate over this, the 5.56 is much better than the 7.62x39. Unless you're talking about 5.56 compared to 5.45x39 as found in the AK-74...Then it's a toss up in my opinion. However the AK lacks a few vital battle features: 1)no bolt hold after the last round. = You don't know if it's empty until you hear click (can cost you your life) 2) an open bolt will make magazine changes much quicker. 3) Magazine inserts take FOREVER on an AK due to its factory design. |

Our gun club rents three ARs (2Bushy&1colt) and a pair of WASR-10s. All rifles have had massive amounts of ammo run through them with little to no cleaning. The ARs all have worn, elliptical pin holes and have needed extractors and barrels replaced. The WASR-10s are still going strong. I took pictures of one of the ARs that I fixed on the line when it was double feeding. It was coated with grit embedded in sludgy oil in the upper and it would barely cycle. It did have thousands of rounds through it. I don't know what the actual failure rate of either sets of rifles are. I just know of some parts replacement on the ARs, which essentially needed a complete rebuild and probably just should've been junked. I also don't know when the ARs were purchased. I think the WASRs are four or five years old. |
| For ergonomics,the M-16 hands down! HOWEVER,any nation with a half-assed machine shop-stamping plant can make an AK,or tell China they love them,and China will send AKs by the boat and plane load.(which is somewhat why Africa is such a shithole,millions of AKs were sent there). |
