I kept dying in level 10, and kept getting shotgun shells but couldn't figure out where to get the shotgun

Read the story after I died the first time at level 10( 101 dead ) and it siad hit the shift key after you found the shotgun to switch between weapons.

But it takes forever to reload versus the revolver.
