Flying will be the most economical. I have done this with close to a hundred dog. If there was a cheaper way, sometimes distance....

I need a project manager who can see this through. I cannot, current obligations require my attention.

@BKKVooDoo

If it doesn't violate coc for Striker approved fundraisers, I will volunteer to collect funds to forward to whomever is handling the airline transportation.
I'm sure a few guys from the St Jude's thread will vouch for me.
Any extra can be donated in Zekes name when the official St Jude's brick fundraiser kicks off.

I just transfered $100.00 to my PP start the airline fee collection.
I will not collect until I get a thumbs up from BKKVooDoo and or OP.

to all hands. Thank you BKKVooDoo for rehoming the GSD.  Taking in a used dog isn't the easiest thing to do.

I’m not sure what more people will be able to do at this point and I’m afraid it might just complicate things. I don’t mind managing things from here on.

Next steps:

We have a line on two airline approved crates. PGMAEU located one from the Ridgefield CT police department and we’ll have more info on that Sunday. Ive also messaged M4DUDE about the crate he presented on page 4.

On Monday morning when Zekes vet opens I have to schedule a wellness check to have him cleared to fly (airline requirement).

Once those two hurdles are cleared its just a matter of booking his flight, which Duke117 has generously offered to cover with his airline miles.

PGMAEU or myself will escort Zeke from the airport to BLKVooDoo’s place. I’ll handle meals and rental car costs etc for that either way. I really want to see Zeke through this myself, I owe it to him. My amazing wife understands and is supportive, but with a newborn and toddler at home, and a critical role at my work I’ll have to see how the timeline lands.

Ill be coordinating with these guys as we move forward. Anyone who knows me knows I have a big heart, but my God, if it hasn’t grown three sizes because of you guys over the last 48 hours.

I’m not sure what to do or say about the offers for funds. If someone see’s an opportunity to use this to raise funds for St Jude or something I am not going to stand in your way. I am just not comfortable taking peoples money myself. If someone feels so compelled I would suggest making a donation to a local shelter in Zeke or Joker1’s name.

Zeke (left) and my next door neighbors dog Logan, who passed away two weeks ago. Some of you may remember my thread about Logans owner dying of cancer at 33 years old about 8 months ago. It’s been a rough stretch.

Zeke and Logan, my first born in my arms and my neighbors first born holding my hand on a hike in our woods.

Zeke in his element.

That makes sense.   You need to accompany him to his new home/owner.  Duke117 and the crate procurer are critical.   Easy enough for you guys to quickly resolve issues and make final plans.

My guess is that the biggest issue is temperature.

@zegermanznew

A status update might be appropriate given today's developments.

The OP will expand as he sees fit but here is a quick synopsis for interested parties:

1. Airline shipping strategy has failed. Delta/United embargo on lives due to remaining Covid restrictions and sytem disruption.

2. American Airlines( remaining option) kennel size restrictions will not allow Zeke to travel in compliance with IATA regs.

3. Ground transport is on deck.

4. General methodolgy/logistics plan being formulated by OP.

Thanks, Duke.

Update

The skinny is Zeke and I will be renting a car and roadtripping to Minnesota. From there Ill be flying home on the generosity of Duke117.

We need to pin down a date but Im essentially 100% on my end with the exception of when I can make it happen with work.

I appreciate Strikers kind gesture and everyones continued support, but I don't want any money for transporting him. We're not well off or anything but I can swing it, and I got Zeke and I to this crossroads so I don't feel right about it. I'm blessed enough to not have to destroy my best friend, to have a stranger willing to fly me across a country, to have had all of your support and to have experienced all of this good will.

If people are still inclined to contribute something I would suggest we start a fund for Zekes future with BLKVooDoo. Food, collar, bed, crate, college, medical bills, whatever it is Zeke might require of BLKVooDoo financially to get set up. I owe BLK the world for this.

It seems Zeke and I will get one last great adventure with each other. I could use some suggestions for short hikes and the best red meat for Zeke to try off I-90 & I-80 between CT and MN.

So I just drove from Middletown CT to Ashtabula Ohio today. It was right on 8 hours. Up 91 to 90 the whole way. Lots of easy driving through NY. Ashtabula has some beaches on Lake Erie and some old Indian trials in a park so if he likes that or swimming it’s kinda cool. There’s stuff going on right now since it’s summer.

Maybe cuz the dog bit him?

OP, growling at the kid would have been out the door.

Biting me would have been a bullet in the head.  Maybe not that second, but shortly there after.  If he bites me, the kids are easily next.

I don’t honestly know how he did it. The thought of trying to organize just one transport chain is logistically nightmarish to me. I’m sitting in the middle of  my backyard with Zeke right now wondering how on earth Joker managed it all. I’ve thought about it a hundred times the last couple days. The man is a blessing.

It's one of the FARs.  Why do they care?  IDK, but basically the rule is a Private Pilot can't accept any sort of compensation.  They way it was explained to me (ground school) is if you're flying some buddies, you can split the gas/landing fees equally, but that's it.  Flying a dog and taking money for gas to do it would be considered "for hire" and would require a Commercial license (and a Part 135 charter operator certificate).  If you want to read the legalese, its in FAR 91.501 in all it's confusing glory.

I am having some issues with my well and in a holding pattern. The water quality really bad and is undrinkable. I ended up getting extremely sick and so did the dogs. I am waiting for the MN DNR to come out and I am weeks away from a well drilling company.

I texted Zekes owner to contact Lisa @ https://skylarsscholarships.org/

The kennel has been working with that GSD specific non-profit for years and will be able to help out while I am out of commission.

@FluffytheCat

As BLK stated it seems our plans have fallen through.

Ive contacted the folks he linked above and will explore potential paths with them.

Duke117 was kind enough to point me to some rescues in my AO. Duke has been amazing through this whole thing. I can’t thank you enough.

I am pretty well emotionally drained and am just going to take the night to breathe and think things through before making any more calls.

For anyone concerned, Zekes euthanasia appointment has been canceled and I have no intention of reinstating it. I don’t think I could’ve brought myself to do it anyways. Zeke is perfectly safe staying in our garage with the chicks until we figure something out. We still get plenty of time together before and after work and before bed, he just doesn’t get to lay around the house anymore. Not the life I envisioned for us but the life we have earned each other for now. .

I guess I should consider myself fortunate this has been one of the toughest experiences of my life.

@zegermanznew

I'm no dog know it all. But have had experience with GS's

I had a problem with my first one because I didn't understand the whole alpha crap.

I didn't want to be his "master". There for he started challenging me. That didn't go over well.

I came to realize that I'm not taking something from him by letting him know that I am the one in control.

But giving him something he needs [balance] in a world he doesn't understand in a way that he does.

When I said "have you tried kicking his ass", I didn't mean feet and fists... But mentally.

I had to pin him to the ground several times. He never bit, but if he had, it would have been ignored especially mentally. For his own good. Not for superiority although thats what its about in there head first. Trust is second, but even more important.    So the pinning was always fallowed with possessive attention. Follow with more time spent doing fun shit.

I may be wrong. But what I see in your situation is a dog unsure of who is in charge, confused, and is trying to tell your kids were they stand in the pack, and now you, by biting you.  He sees himself as in charge.

You have to be the biggest most aggressive asshole to that dog, while also showing him big love some time after depending on his reaction. And you have to 100% mean it, or they will see through it.

I only write this because BLKVooDoo has backed out, and hope you can correct this situation and save your dog.

It's my understanding that situation in only temporary, until his water issue can be resolved.  A few months maybe.

If Zeke would get along with an elderly female Golden Retriever, I'd be happy to foster him here in my spacious Northern Virginia townhouse located on a sprawling 1/8th of an acre.

@striker - can this thread get moved back to GD? It seems getting thrown into this sub-forum it loses visibility and I would have never known about this sub-forum if it wasn't for subscribing to this thread when it was in GD.

@zegermanznew
Wasn't dannylgriffen interested in taking Zeke at one point? Is he still wanting to take Zeke. Not trying to step on toes but looking at options.
