| The blue water in the port-o-john is frozen |
|
-10 or so in Illinois one time when I was still OTR... Sitting at the dock waiting for them to unload the trailer, sat a 1 liter bottle of soda on top of the mirror and it was half frozen in 5 minutes. Or the time I was picking up a load of ice cream in Vermont, about the same air temp - pre-cool the trailer to -20, huh? I think I'll just open the doors for a few minutes... Or -20(perhaps a bit lower, I don't think those electronic thermometers work well at low temps) in Iowa - truck running, heater blowing full blast, diesel powered furnace going full blast, wearing warm clothes inside a sleeping bag, and STILL shivering... |
|
I saw a show about people who live up past the circle and maintain pipelines in Siberia.
They depend on these huge service trucks. Your truck breaks down, you die. It's that simple. They spit, it hits the ground frozen. To start the trucks in the morning, they have to light fires under the fuel tanks, because the diesel freezes solid. |

I'm sitting North of the arctic circle as we speak. The diesels aren't frozen, and an engine block heater is plenty to let you start her up. Once we go sub -20, they never get turned off. It was -53 with wind chill last night, and the spit didn't freeze before it hit the ground. Close though! My gas truck is sitting unplugged and off at the moment. It will start right up when I go out there. Current temp -35F. |

Well, that is interesting. My story is actually true. |

I went camping with some friends on a winter weekend many years ago. We had 8" of snow cover and low temps of -8 F. Good times sitting around the fire while keeping your beer close enough to the fire to keep from freezing! Fuck that! I'd kill for some slushy whiskey right now! Stuck on an oilfield, and it's a dry county. |

Worked with an Indian (dot not feather) engineer. Apparently, it doesn't get really cold where he is from. One time when it got to near -10 he stepped out side to smoke a cigarette. He walked past me on his way back in looking extremely unhappy. I said. "You OK Raj?" Raj being his name and all.
He turned to me with a truly shocked expression on his face and said...."I do not know where is my DICK!"

...the lawyers and politicians have their hands in their own pockets.
ETA The early coast-to-coast airliners had a problem with their blue ice. The tanks would freeze and crack, and a large block of blue ice would form on the outside of the aircraft. When the aircraft started to descend west of the Rockies, the ice would heat up and flake off. The houses below would get hit by these blocks of ice. This was the first time in history where Americans were being hit by ICBMs*. *icy B-Ms. |
