My kids x box won't come on.

you hit the power button, it turns green, and after 30 seconds or so it starts flashing red.  What's up with that?

Red Ring of death.

You need to send it in to Microsoft to get it repaired.

Yep. Has to be sent back to Microsoft. I wouldn't bother trying to fix it yourself.

It sucks, I got it a few months ago.  Called that night and got the outsourced Pakastani guy.  Had a box in few days.  Sent it out and had it back in under two weeks.

From what I hear this is no longer a problem, apparently newly manufactured 360s do not over heat.

Welcome to the crew.

There is no xbox gamer that hasnt had the RROD.  There are those that have and those that will.

+2

Customer Service is pretty good though, If you're still under warranty.  Do the whole thing on line and they'll send you a shipping box with labels etc.  Quick turn around.  I guess they get a lot of practice..

I called, had a box to send it in two days, and I had a new XBox in less than a week.  I checked the tracking number, and they had a new 360 shipped out before they even received the old one back in.  Its a known problem that they take care of without any intervention on your part outside of calling them and dropping your old one off at any location that UPS picks up from.

Interesting.

I have an Xbox 360, played COD4 on it for a while, no RROD death yet.

Have a PS3 doing folding@home 24/7 still going strong too.

Maybe frequent turning on and off kills these things?

I think there is a surge when first turned on that can kill some electronics.

At least when you get it back you'll have an XBOX live card taped to it as a "sorry about that".

The 'red ring of death' was never from any one cause. It's just a 'general hardware fault' code, and can be caused by a number of things, including over heating. I think the final word on the biggest cause was that the RoHS compliant solder being used on the motherboard was sub standard, and would fail from thermal cycling.

If it's any value, my 360 has been running fine with the 65nm core. It was manufactured in September of this year. I hope it keeps running, because I'm guessing I voided the warentee opening it up. But from what I've heard Microsoft doesn't really give a shit anymore and will replace anything you send them.

Oh, one more thing.  The guy at GameStop told me the new XBox 360 machines do not have the stame RROD problem.  He said something about Microsoft improving the production quality control.

I just got juniors back from microsoft. It took 2 weeks from start to finish to get it back. Customer Service was pretty good. I have been told that you need to keep the box laying flat instead of having it upright,

Good luck, I hope everything works out for you

My console bought on launch day just got the RROD a couple nights ago. I've already replaced it but just got off the phone with customer service and they'll repair it free. So yay, I'll have a backup.

I've seen this work.  The first "fix" yielded a few days of playing time before the RROD showed up again. YMMV

No Problem.  It's by serial number, so if it's still under the warranty period, you're covered.
